New Amsterdam Singers present O Magnum Mysterium

The New Amsterdam Singers, led by music director Clara Longstreth, will present O Magnum Mysterium: Renaissance and Contemporary Meditations on the Season, a program of mostly a cappella sacred choral music, including works by Tomás Luis de Victoria, Jacob Handl, William Byrd, J.S. Bach, and contemporary composers Abbie Betinis, Stephen Paulus, Eric Whitacre, and Morten Lauridsen.

The concerts will take place Friday, December 16, 2016, at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 18, 2016, at 4:00 p.m., at Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway and 93rd Street, New York City.

Featured on the program are three of the most popular and well known musical settings of the text O Magnum Mysterium, ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Opening the concert is Missa O Magnum Mysterium for a cappella chorus by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611). Victoria’s  motet of the same name will conclude the concert. Other setting of the same text are  by Morten Lauridsen (b.1943) and Jacob Handl (1550-91).
