Glenview Community Church, Glenview, Illinois, has commissioned Paul Ayres to compose a Fantasy-Sonata for solo organ, based on the Harold Arlen song "Over the Rainbow," in celebration of the church's 75th anniversary. Gary Wendt, Glenview's minister for music & organist, will be giving the premiere on October 9. The Fantasy-Sonata is a 17-minute continuous piece, in 7/8 time throughout. Ayres was originally asked to create a 5-minute work, but he says: "as I started to write, more and more permutations of the melody appeared, and, shall we say, it got a little out of hand!"
