A man of many talents, John was an artist, a great cook, and possessed a rich baritone voice. His dream to be an organ builder came true when he, Walter Guzowski and Christopher Kane established Guzowski and Steppe Organbuilders, Inc., in 1983. A man of many talents, John was an artist, a great cook, and a consummate singer possessing a rich baritone voice. But his true passion and dream was to be an organ builder. This dream came true when he, Walter Guzowski and Christopher Kane established Guzowski and Steppe Organbuilders, Inc., in 1983. His passion and love of the organ was evident in every instrument he dealt with. He is survived by his mother, Sonia Bobo, of Neptune, NJ. Raymond J. Barnes, 73, founding dean of the Southern Nevada AGO Chapter, died suddenly of a heart attack the afternoon of May 21, after having played for the morning worship service. On April 30, 2006, the chapter presented him with an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the guild. Born in 1933 in Adrian, Michigan, he began piano lessons at age five with his aunt, Ella Kafer, later studying with Myria Fox, whose piano studio was on the campus of Adrian College, where he saw the college’s four-manual Hutchings-Votey organ. He entered Adrian College in 1951 and began organ study with James Houston Spencer, graduating in 1955.
Barnes’s career in music education included teaching in Pensacola, Florida; Biloxi, Mississippi; and in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he was influential in developing and implementing a music curriculum for the Clark County schools. His teaching career in Clark County, Nevada spanned 25 years, during which time he earned a master’s degree from University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
In addition to his activities in the AGO and in music education organizations, he was a member of the Fellowship of Methodist Musicians, and with his wife was active in the Swedish American Fraternal Organization, the VASA Order of America. He is survived by his wife Inga-Britt of Las Vegas and by two brothers. A memorial service was held on the campus of UNLV on June 11.
The Southern Nevada AGO Chapter has established the Raymond J. Barnes Memorial Scholarship Fund to assist young students interested in the organ with lesson scholarships, and to help underwrite attendance at Pipe Organ Encounters. Charles M. Eve, 72, died of cancer at his residence on February 10. He was a retired assistant professor of music at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and organist at the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, Louisiana. A graduate of Central High School in Pueblo, Colorado, he earned the bachelor of music and master of music degrees from University of Colorado, where he also did additional study. His teachers included Arthur Poister, Claire Coci, and Vernon DeTar. He served as an organist and chaplain’s assistant in the U.S. Army.
Before coming to Monroe, he taught at Temple Buell College and the University of Colorado, and served as organist and choir director at Christ Methodist Church in Denver. In 1956, he placed second in the AGO playing competition. While studying in New York City, he served as organist at All Angels Church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and Interchurch Center.
After coming to NLU in Monroe, Louisiana, he served as organist at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Grace Episcopal Church, and the First Presbyterian Church. He had given recitals at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., New York’s Riverside and Trinity churches, and at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was the former dean and founder of the Ouachita Valley AGO Chapter, a member of the American Musicological Society, and the National Association of Presbyterian Musicians.
Mr. Eve is survived by his sister and her husband, as well as by a nephew and two nieces, and a host of friends and former students. A memorial concert was held February 25 at the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. A series of memorial concerts is planned.

Rolande Falcinelli died in Pau, France, on June 11, at the age of 86. She was one of the leading exponents of the modern French school of organists-improvisers-composers and taught organ and improvisation at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique from 1954 to 1986. Among her pupils are some of the greatest French virtuosos and improvisers of our time.
A favorite disciple of Marcel Dupré, she was the most authorized performer of his works, as the composer himself asserted. She reached the highest level of virtuosic skill, as testified by her own Poèmes-études, the most difficult pieces ever written for the organ, which she played and recorded in the U.S.A. during her legendary 1950 tour.
As a composer, she leaves a catalog of 74 opus numbers that includes organ, piano and harpsichord works, chamber music, vocal music and orchestral works. Her writing is characterized by tormented chromatic harmonic progressions, by explorations of tone color, and by the new perspectives of extra-European music (she integrated Persian and Indian modes and rhythms into her works). She pursued and extended Marcel Dupré’s ideals, associating the organ with other instruments: she composed works for organ and violin, organ and violoncello, organ and viola, organ and two violas, organ and flute, organ and piano, organ and voice, organ and orchestra.
Today, her artistic legacy (as a performer, an improviser and a composer) is inspiring an awakening interest in her works, sustained by a progressive series of CDs and numerous publications. —Sylviane Falcinelli

A mass was held at Saint-Eustache Church in Paris, France, on June 30 in remembrance of Rolande Falcinelli. The titular organist Jean Guillou, who was one of her first disciples (he began to take private lessons from her in 1947), improvised with an unforgettable and moving intensity at the beginning and at the end of this ceremony. Philippe Brandeis (the last of her 65 students awarded the First Prize in Organ at the Paris Conservatory) interpreted her works: Offertory for the Feast of Christ the King (op. 38), Prayer to the Holy Spirit (op. 24, no. 4), and Antiphon of the Salve Regina (op. 43). Her colleague Jason Meyer, the American violinist from Boston, performed his own special arrangement for violin solo of the cadences and solos in her work for organ and violin, Song of Sorrow and Struggle (op. 53). Gregorian chants were sung by a men’s choir from the Paris Conservatory, directed by Louis-Marie Vigne. The Belgian Stéphane Detournay, a specialist of her works, also rendered homage to her high spiritual ideals and her constant devotion to her art.

John Anthony Steppe lost a year-long battle with cancer at the age of 51 on October 14, 2005. He was a native of New Jersey, born in Jersey City on February 3, 1954. He studied voice at Westminster Choir College. A man of many talents, he was an artist, a gourmet cook, and a consummate vocalist. His rich bass/baritone voice was heard in many venues around south Florida, most notably in the church choirs of St. John the Evangelist, Lighthouse Point; St. Martin in the Fields, Pompano Beach; and finally at St. Gregory’s in Boca Raton. He sang with the Florida Philharmonic Chorus and was featured bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah in a community-wide production at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale. But his true passion and dream was to be an organbuilder. The dream became a reality when he, Walter Guzowski, and Christopher Kane established Guzowski and Steppe Organ Builders, Inc., in 1983. His passion and love of the instrument was evident in the craftsmanship in every instrument he designed or enhanced. John’s graceful, lyric visual designs were inspirational. He was a master in woodworking as well. He is survived by his mother, Sonia Bobo, of Neptune, New Jersey. Innumerable friends will miss his exuberant personality, acutely wry sense of humor, and delight in all things musical. Henry VanSeters, curator of the organs at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, for 42 years, died in September 2005 in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. He began playing the organ at age 10, apprenticing in his teens and later becoming an organbuilder, technician and installer for M. P. Möller. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II, and after the war was appointed curator of organs at West Point.
He guided the rebuilding and expansion of the Cadet Chapel organ from 211 ranks to more than 334 ranks. In addition to the chapel organ, he maintained, tuned, and rebuilt the Post Chapel, Catholic Chapel, Old Cadet Chapel, and St. Martin’s Chapel organs all on the USMA post.
In addition to maintaining and rebuilding numerous organs in the Hudson River Valley, he built five pipe organs for various churches, including his home church, The Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Clifton, New Jersey. He was a frequent consultant to churches and attended conventions of the American Guild of Organists, American Institute of Organbuilders, and Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America.
Mr. VanSeters is survived by Teresa, his wife of 54 years, a son and daughter, granddaughters, and many friends. A memorial service was held at the Cadet Chapel with organists Lee Dettra and A. Robert Chapman.

Leonard Edwin Bearse Sr. died in Amesbury, Massachusetts on May 4, at the age of 73. Born in Hyannis, Bearse had his first church job at age 14, at the First Baptist Church there. He studied the organ in Germany while serving with the Armed Forces there, and studied choral conducting with Robert Shaw. He earned a master of music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, studying organ with Donald Willing. He was a public school teacher in various eastern Massachusetts towns, and held music positions in various churches, most recently as minister of music at the Congregational Church in Kensington, New Hampshire, where he played his last service on March 16. Leonard Bearse is survived by his wife, Ellen, and his children Leonard E. Jr., Bruce, and Stephanie.

Michael Cohen, age 69, died June 21 in Asheville, North Carolina. A native of Tampa, Florida, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Florida State University–Tallahassee. He taught music in the Florida public schools for 39 years, and was organist-music director for the Church of the Holy Spirit in Apopka, Florida, for the past 17 years. A past dean of the Central Florida AGO chapter, he was a member of the Winter Park Bach Festival Choir. Michael Cohen is survived by his partner, Carl Brown; his brother Paul (and wife Donna), and brother Joel (and partner Barry Dingman).

Robert E. Glasgow, Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Music, noted concert organist, and one of the most widely respected artists in the field of organ performance and pedagogy, died on September 10 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was 83.
Professor Glasgow taught organ at the University of Michigan School of Music for 44 years. He received his B.M. and M.M. degrees from the Eastman School of Music in 1950 and 1951, respectively, earning Eastman’s Performer’s Certificate as well. At Eastman, he studied with Harold Gleason. From 1951 to 1962, he was associate professor of organ and college organist at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. He joined the University of Michigan School of Music in 1962 as assistant professor, and was promoted to associate professor in 1964, full professor in 1973, and professor emeritus in 2006.
In 1973, Glasgow was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts degree, honoris causa, by MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. The New York Chapter of the American Guild of Organists named him International Performer of the Year for 1997. Glasgow returned to his alma mater in January 2002, where he was given the school’s Alumni Achievement Award. On the same occasion, he taught a masterclass, influencing yet another generation of Eastman students. Glasgow’s faculty colleagues at the University of Michigan also recognized his pedagogical efforts by awarding him the Harold Haugh Award for excellence in the teaching of performance.
For over 50 years, he successfully combined a brilliant teaching career with an impressive career as a concert organist, both in the United States and abroad. He was best known for his stirring performances of the organ literature of the 19th century, and was regarded by some as the greatest living interpreter of Romantic organ music. He was a regularly featured performer for national and regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists as well as the International Congress of Organists. He was selected to perform and teach at the American Classic Organ Symposium on the occasion of the completion of the renovation of the great Tabernacle Organ at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dr. Glasgow’s performances of the music of Liszt, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Widor, Vierne, and especially César Franck were legendary; in one review he was given the appropriate nickname “the Philadelphia Orchestra of Organists.” In addition to a number of broadcast recordings for the BBC, Glasgow made one commercial recording for Prestant Records in 1987, Robert Glasgow plays César Franck, recorded on the Aeolian-Skinner organ in All Saints Church, Worcester, Massachusetts.
A leading educator of uncompromising standards, Robert Glasgow helped to form some of the most gifted organists in the world. His students are to be found in important church and academic positions throughout the United States. He was an artist in the truest sense, and a teacher who constantly reminded his students that they must not strive merely to be organists, but always musicians— communicating musical ideas in spite of the inherent difficulty of the instrument.
Robert Ellison Glasgow was born on May 30, 1925 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the son of Floyd Lafayette Glasgow and Elizabeth Mary Jenkins. His death is mourned by his many devoted students, friends, and colleagues. (See the interview with Stephen Egler, “Robert Glasgow at 80,” The Diapason, May 2005.)

Walter A. Guzowski died September 17 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was 68. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, his career had a dramatic beginning. While still a high school student, he observed an organ technician tuning the Schlicker organ at his church, and informed the pastor that he could do what the technician had done, and save the church some money. Later, while doing some tuning, Guzowski slipped off the walkboard onto the chest below, crushing numerous pipes; to rectify this, his father brought him to Herman Schlicker, and Guzowski began working at the Schlicker Organ Company, where he worked (except for two years serving in the Army) until 1979. While at Schlicker he became head voicer and tonal finisher, working on a range of instruments, from two-rank residence organs to the large organ at First Congregational Church in Los Angeles. After moving to Fort Lauderdale in 1979, he founded a service business, which with John A. Steppe and Christopher B. Kane, became Guzowski & Steppe Organbuilders, Inc. in 1983. Walter Guzowski is survived by his sister Margaret, her husband Walter, and cousins and friends.

Gerhard Krapf died in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on July 2. He was 83. Krapf was renowned for his organ, choral, and vocal compositions, his scholarly writings on the organ, his teaching at the University of Alberta (1977–87, for which he was named professor emeritus), and for designing the 1978 Casavant organ there. He contributed significantly to the development of graduate programs in keyboard and library resources at the University of Alberta; in the 1960s, he had established and built the undergraduate and graduate organ programs at the University of Iowa’s School of Music. Gerhard Krapf is survived by his wife, Trudl, three daughters, a son, a brother, sister, and four grandchildren.

John S. Peragallo, Jr. died Friday, September 12 at the Hospice of New Jersey, Wayne, New Jersey, at age 76. Born in New York City and a lifelong resident of Paterson, he took several classes at the Newark College of Engineering, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a chaplain’s assistant and in the honor guard.
As a boy he helped his father in the family business, the Peragallo Pipe Organ Company, founded by his father, John Peragallo, Sr., in 1918. John Jr. joined the company in 1949. He was responsible for the construction and care of many of the pipe organs of New Jersey and the complete renovation of the organs at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City. John Jr.’s sons, John III and Frank, have been actively involved in the family business since the 1980s and now have a fourth generation of Peragallos, Janine, Anthony and John IV, to work alongside them. The company has installed almost 700 new instruments and currently maintains approximately 400 instruments, up and down the East Coast of the United States, including the organs of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York.

Jeffri W. Bantz, 52, died July 31 after a brief illness. A native of Marion, Indiana, he moved with his family to Florida in 1969 when his father, The Rev. Wayne Bantz, started First Methodist Church of Coral Springs. A graduate of Deerfield Beach High School, he was concertmaster of the school orchestra. His first church job in Florida was at the First Baptist Church in Deerfield Beach. He served several churches including First Methodist Church of Pompano Beach and St. Stephen’s Episcopal in Coconut Grove. In 1981 he became organist and associate director of music at the First Presbyterian Church of Pompano Beach (known as the Pink Church ), where he had began organ study with Arden Whitacre some eleven years prior. In 1998 he became director of music at the Pink Church, where he remained until June 2006.
Bantz studied organ performance at Florida Atlantic University and the University of Miami. Throughout his conducting career he continued his studies with such choral conductors as Robert Shaw, George Bragg, Joseph Flummerfelt, David Willcocks, John Rutter, Howard Swan, Gerre Hancock, and James Litton. In 2000, Bantz joined the Florida Philharmonic Chorus as assistant director. When the orchestra folded three years later, he and Jo-Michael Scheibe led the chorus in its new form as the Master Chorale of South Florida.
Bantz was associated with the Florida’s Singing Sons Boychoir for 20 years. During his 17-year tenure as music director, the choir won numerous awards including at least four international first prizes during their many concert tours around the world. They included the 1996 Kathaumixw International Choral Festival and Competition in British Columbia, the 1997 Prague International Choir Festival in the Czech Republic, and the 1998 Princeton Invitational Choir Competition. Under Bantz’s direction, the boychoir was featured in performances with James Judd, Maureen Forester, Chanticleer, Audrey Hepburn, Liza Minnelli, Judy Collins, the Bee Gees (with whom they recorded a CD) and many others. A longtime member of ACDA, Bantz’s choirs were featured at state, divisional, and national ACDA conventions. He was the accompanist for the School of the Arts Singers, from the Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, directed by his longtime friend and colleague Arlene Graham Sparks, at their Disney Hall concert at the 2005 national convention in Los Angeles. Bantz also served ACDA as the Southern Division Boychoir Chair in the 1990s.
Equally in demand as a solo artist or accompanist, Bantz performed in South Florida with the University of Miami Symphony, the Palm Beach Opera, the Miami Beach Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ft. Lauderdale Symphony Chorus, the Gold Coast Opera, the Ft. Lauderdale Christian Chorale, and the Nova Singers. He also served as conductor or accompanist for numerous international artists such as Marvis Martin, Dean Peterson, Janice Chandler, Steven Rickards, Curtis Rayam and many others. An accomplished organist, Bantz was active in the American Guild of Organists, having served as Dean of the Ft. Lauderdale Chapter. He served as adjudicator and guest clinician for numerous festivals, clinics, and symposia throughout his career.
The recipient of many local, state, and national awards, Bantz was awarded the Joseph Leavitt Award for outstanding achievement in the arts in 1993. In 2005 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Broward County Music Teachers Association.
Jeffri Bantz is survived by his parents, The Reverend Wayne and Marilynn Bantz, his brother Gregg and sister-in-law Julie, his aunt and uncle Carl and Virginia Bantz, cousin Bradley and his wife Janell, as well as additional aunts and uncles. He is also survived by his colleague and partner, organist Mark Jones. It was Bantz’s wish that there be no memorial service. A celebration concert of his life will be held at a later date. Richard L. Krueger, 63 years old, died July 8 in Sunnyvale, California, after a valiant battle against recurrent melanoma cancer. The founding owner and chief recording engineer of Arkay Records, Krueger was born January 6, 1943, and took great inspiration from his entrepreneurial grandfather. He started Arkay records in October 1960, having studied recording engineering with Howard Dinowitz at CBS Masterworks, developing “360-Sound” using 3-channel recording. Mr. Krueger’s adaptation of this approach to organ recording produced a sense of realism.
From 1962–1965, Arkay Records was based in Chicago with 125 recordings of school and church music programs. In addition to recording choirs and organs, Krueger was also passionate about trains, recording thousands of trains, releasing 16 train albums and working for the railroad throughout the United States as an engineer and fireman. In 1967, Arkay Studios moved to San Mateo, California, and offered both recording and photography services. After a brief closure in 1969, Arkay relocated to Sunnyvale, specializing in train recording and selling hobby products. His recorded train sounds were used by MGM, Disney, Warner Brothers, Universal Studios and George Lucas Films in a total of seven motion pictures including “The Love Bug.”
In the 1970s, he also continued to record school and church music programs and helped to develop Westape, a company specializing in high quality cassettes and high-speed duplication. From 1967–1982, he recorded 150 record albums involving 72 artists. In October 1983, he released his first organ compact disc and from 1983–2006, he released 123 albums involving 80 artists, of which 63 were concert organists, in venues across the United States, France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. He was an active member of the Peninsula Chapter of the AGO. He is survived by his two sons Robert and Christopher Krueger.
Among the artists who recorded for Arkay Records are Janice Beck, Craig Cramer, Angela Craft Cross, Pamela Decker, Jonathan Dimmock, Delbert Disselhorst, Paul Fejko, Faythe Freese, Stephen Hamilton, Barbara Harbach, James Higdon, Wilma Jensen, Boyd Jones, Marilyn Keiser, James Kibbie, Thomas Murray, Douglas Reed, Sandra Soderlund, Burton Tidwell, James Welch, David Westfall, and others.

Clyde Holloway died December 18, 2013, in Houston, Texas. He was 77 years old. The Herbert S. Autrey Professor Emeritus of Organ at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Holloway earned B.Mus. (1957) and M.Mus. (1959) degrees from the University of Oklahoma, studying with Mildred Andrews, and the S.M.D. degree in 1974 from Union Theological Seminary, studying with Robert Baker.

Holloway’s concert career began in 1964 when he won the National Young Artists Competition of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) in Philadelphia. He performed under the auspices of Karen McFarlane Artists, and was a featured artist at numerous AGO conventions, also appearing in recital in Mexico City, the West Indies, and Europe.

His doctoral dissertation, The Organ Works of Olivier Messiaen and Their Importance in His Total Oeuvre, remains an important monograph concerning this music. Holloway worked with the composer on several occasions, examined his works at the organ of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Paris, and performed under his supervision. As a Fulbright Scholar at the Amsterdam Conservatory, he worked with Gustav Leonhardt in the study of organ, harpsichord, and chamber music.

Clyde Holloway began his teaching career in 1965 as the youngest member of the Indiana University School of Music faculty. In 1977, he joined the faculty of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he established the organ program and served as Chairman of the Keyboard Department and Director of Graduate Studies. The school’s widely acclaimed Fisk-Rosales organ embodies his unique understanding of how numerous organ-building traditions and tonal designs are manifested in organ literature and will be considered his most profound contribution to Rice University, Houston, and the larger musical world. He also served as organist and choirmaster of Christ Church Cathedral in Houston for many years; in 1993, he was named Honorary Lay Canon and Organist and Choirmaster Emeritus.

Renowned as a gifted pedagogue, Dr. Holloway served on the AGO’s Committee for Professional Education, addressed two conferences of the National Conference on Organ Pedagogy, led workshops and masterclasses, and served as a member of the jury for numerous competitions, including the Concours de Europe, the Fort Wayne Competition, the Music Teachers National Association Competition, the National Young Artists Competition of the American Guild of Organists, and the Grand Prix de Chartres. In 1994 he was invited to perform for the Bicentennial Festival of the celebrated Clicquot organ in the Cathedral of Poitiers, France, and served as a member of the jury for the international competition held at the end of the ten-day festival. 

Sylvie Poirier, 65 years old, passed away December 21, 2013 in Montréal of cancer. Born in Montréal on February 15, 1948 into a family of artists, her father was a goldsmith jeweller, and her mother, a painter and sculptor, was a pupil of the renowned painter Paul-Emile Borduas. Influenced by her parents, she began drawing and painting, and studied piano from an early age and later studied organ at l’Ecole de Musique Vincent d’Indy, Montréal. In 1970 she gained her baccalaureat in the class of Françoise Aubut and went on to study at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal with Bernard Lagacé, with whom she obtained her Premier Prix in 1975. In 1976 Poirier studied at l’Université de Montréal with the blind French organist Antoine Reboulot. From 1977–1983 she was professeur affilié at l’Ecole de Musique Vincent d’Indy, presenting private music and drawing courses around Montréal.

In 1983 she became the Founding President of “Unimusica Inc.” whose objective was to bring together the art forms of music, painting, enamels, as well as poetry and photography. At the invitation of the oncologist founder of “Vie nouvelle” at Hôtel-Dieu Hospital, Montréal, Poirier taught a course specifically designed for cancer patients entitled “Psychology of Life through Drawing” in the 1980s. 

She gave recitals in North America and Europe and broadcast many times for Radio Canada. Her organ duet career with her husband Philip Crozier spanned eighteen years, with eight commissioned and premièred works, numerous concerts in many countries, several broadcasts at home and abroad, and three CDs of original organ duets.

Sylvie Poirier also recorded Jean Langlais’ Première Symphonie, and Petr Eben’s Job and The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart; she gave the latter work’s North American première of the published version in Montréal in 2005. Poirier was also an accomplished painter and portraitist; examples of her work can be found at sylviepoirier.com.

She was predeceased by her only son Frédéric (30) in 2007. Sylvie Poirier is survived by her husband, Philip Crozier.

Phares L. Steiner died in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 14, 2013 at age 85. Born in Lima, Ohio, Steiner earned a bachelor’s degree in organ at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and a master’s degree in organ performance at the University of Michigan in 1952, where he studied with Robert Noehren and where he began his career as an organ builder, at first working with Noehren. In 1953 with Noehren as consultant, Steiner designed the prototype of an electric-action slider chest. After service in the Army he worked with Fouser Associates in Birmingham, Michigan from 1955 to 1957. He established Steiner Organs Inc. in 1959 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in 1962 relocated to Louisville, where he was joined in 1966 by Gottfried Reck from Kleuker in Germany. They incorporated in 1968 as Steiner Reck Inc.; Steiner was responsible for tonal matters of more than 90 organs, many of which were mechanical action. 

After retiring from Steiner Reck in 1988, he continued pipe organ work on a freelance basis, including working at Webber & Borne Organ Builders, and R.A. Daffer in the Washington, D.C. area while living in Columbia, Maryland. Phares Steiner returned to Louisville in 2003 with his family, where they became members of the Cathedral of the Assumption, home to one of his largest instruments.  

A charter member of the American Institute of Organbuilders, Steiner was also an active member of APOBA at Steiner Reck and a member of Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity. He also served as organist at several churches, including St. Louis Catholic Church in Clarkesville, Maryland, and Trinity Catholic Church, Louisville. 

Phares L. Steiner is survived by his wife Ellen Heineman Steiner, daughter Adrienne, son Paul, and brother, Donald F. Steiner M.D.

Marianne Webb, 77, of Carbondale, Illinois, died December 7, 2013, at Parkway Manor in Marion, Illinois, from metastatic breast cancer, which she had for the past 20 years. She enjoyed a lengthy and distinguished career as a recitalist and professor of music at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC).

Miss Webb was born on October 4, 1936, in Topeka, Kansas where she exhibited an early passion for organ music. While in Topeka, she began her studies with Richard M. Gayhart and continued with Jerald Hamilton at Washburn University, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, in 1958. She obtained the Master of Music degree, with highest distinction, from the University of Michigan (1959), as a scholarship student of Marilyn Mason. Further study was with Max Miller of Boston University and Robert Noehren at the University of Michigan.

After teaching organ and piano at Iowa State University for two years, she continued her studies in Paris as a Fulbright scholar with André Marchal. Further graduate study was with Arthur Poister at Syracuse University and Russell Saunders at the Eastman School of Music.

Marianne Webb taught organ and music theory and served as university organist at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1965 until her retirement in 2001 as professor emerita of music. She continued to serve as visiting professor and distinguished university organist for an additional 11 years. During her tenure, she built a thriving organ department and established, organized, and directed the nationally acclaimed SIUC Organ Festivals (1966–1980), the first of their kind in the country. The school’s 58-rank Reuter pipe organ she sought funding for and designed was named in her honor.

Miss Webb married David N. Bateman on October 3, 1970, in Carbondale. Together they gave the endowment that established in perpetuity the Marianne Webb and David N. Bateman Distinguished Organ Recital Series that presents each year outstanding, well-established concert organists in recital for the residents of southern Illinois.

As a concert artist, Marianne Webb toured extensively throughout the United States, performing for American Guild of Organists (AGO) chapters, churches, colleges and universities. In addition, she maintained an active schedule of workshops, master classes, and seminars for church music conferences. A member of the AGO, she served the guild as a member of the national committees on Educational Resources, Chapter Development, and Membership Development and Chapter Support. Locally, she re-established the Southern Illinois Chapter of the AGO in 1983 and served as its dean for six years. She performed recitals and presented workshops at numerous AGO national and regional conventions. For many years she concertized under the auspices of the Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists. She recorded on the ProOrgano and Pleiades labels and was featured on the nationally syndicated American Public Media program “Pipedreams.” 

Miss Webb maintained a balanced career as both performer and teacher. Her students have distinguished themselves by winning local, area, and national competitions. A sought-after adjudicator, Miss Webb was a member of the jury for many of the country’s most prestigious competitions. She also served as an organ consultant to numerous churches in the Midwest.

A special collection, which bears her name, is housed in the University Archives of Morris Library on the SIUC campus. Upon completion, this collection will include all of her professional books, music, recordings, and papers. Her “Collection of Sacred Music” has been appraised as “one of the largest private gatherings of sacred music in the world with a particular emphasis on the pipe organ.”

Among numerous honors during her long and distinguished career, Miss Webb has received the Distinguished Service Award from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, life membership in the Fulbright Association, the AGO’s Edward A. Hansen Leadership Award recognizing her outstanding leadership in the Guild, and the St. Louis AGO Chapter’s Avis Blewett Award, given for outstanding contributions to the field of organ and/or sacred music. From the Theta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota at Washburn University she received the Sword of Honor and the Honor Certificate.

Miss Webb is survived by her twin sister, Peggy Westlund; a niece, Allison Langford; a nephew, Todd Westlund; a godson, R. Kurt Barnhardt, PhD; and her former husband, Dr. David N. Bateman.

Throughout her lifetime Miss Webb was confronted with great adversities, which she overcame to become a nationally recognized organ teacher and recitalist. She leaves an impressive legacy of students holding positions of prominence in colleges and churches throughout the United States. She will be remembered not only for her musical artistry and excellence in teaching, but as a woman of quiet strength, courage, and abiding faith. In gratitude to God for her lifelong career, she established the St. Cecilia Recital Endowment in 2007 to present world-renowned concert organists in recital during the biennial national conventions of the American Guild of Organists.

At a later date, a memorial organ recital played by Paul Jacobs will take place in Shryock Auditorium, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Memorials may be sent to SIU Foundation to benefit the Distinguished Organ Recital Series Endowment.

Kent S. Dennis died January 1 at the age of 78 in Midland, Michigan. Trained as a chemist, Dr. Dennis had a long career at Dow Chemical Co. in Midland; he retired in 1986 after 32 years as a senior research associate. He served as organist at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland for 47 years, and was named organist emeritus in 2003. There he performed annual organ recitals for 46 years; he also taught organ students for many years. A charter member of the Saginaw Valley AGO chapter, serving as dean for three terms, he also served on the board of managers of the Midland Center for the Arts and as president of the Midland Symphony Orchestra, which, with the Music Society, honored him as Musician of the Year in 1987.
In 2002 Steven Egler commissioned an organ piece, Fantasia on Dennis, by David Gillingham in honor of Dr. Dennis. With his technical background, he built a pipe organ in his home, and when his health declined, he donated the instrument to St. Joseph the Worker Church in Beal City, Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, and a brother. Memorials may be made to the Kent S. August Humer died January 17 in Linz, Austria, at the age of 59. He had studied organ and harpsichord with Anton Heiller and Isolde Ahlgrimm in Vienna; after finishing his diploma, he traveled to the U.S., where he began an active career as a recitalist under the management of Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists. In 1972–74 he won prizes at the international competitions in Innsbruck and Nuremberg, and subsequently performed in Europe and in North America.
In 1972 he was appointed head of the organ and historical keyboard instruments department at the Bruckner Konservatorium in Linz, Austria. He became organist at Linz Old Cathedral in 1975, and made numerous recordings on its organ, a three-manual instrument by Franz Xavier Chrismann (1768) and Josef Breinbauer (1867). Professor Humer was a frequent visiting lecturer in Europe and the U.S., and served as an adviser to the historical instrument collection of the Upper Austria Regional Museum.

Herbert James Keeler died September 6, 2006, in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 67. He began piano studies at age six, and in his teens began playing the organ in his father’s church. In 1961 he graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, where he earned two music degrees, one in organ. In 1966 he moved to New York City and began a 29-year career with Western Electric, retiring as a computer systems analyst. Mr. Keeler served as organist for numerous churches and was an active member of the AGO. He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carole. A memorial service was held September 17, 2006, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Greensboro.

Paul S. Robinson died February 15 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the age of 99. Born March 8, 1907, in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Westminster College in 1929 and began study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia that same year. His first venture into North Carolina was in 1932 as the summer organist at Duke University where he continued for 10 years. After obtaining a master’s degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, he became a year-round North Carolina resident in 1938 as organist for Centenary United Methodist Church in downtown Winston-Salem. There he started his long association as organist and accompanist for the Mozart Club’s annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah.
The 1941 presentation was December 7, during which the Messiah radio broadcast was interrupted by the news of the Pearl Harbor attack. Two months later, Paul was inducted into the Army’s Third Armored Division as a chaplain’s assistant. He traveled with them in England, France and Germany, where he played a folding reed organ for services.
Discharged in 1945, he returned to Centenary United Methodist staying until he started doctoral studies, also at Union Theological Seminary, where he received a Doctor of Sacred Music degree in 1951. In 1952, he came to Wake Forest College for a temporary position at about the same time as another temporary instructor, Mary Frances McFeeters. Within a few years, they became indispensable both to Wake Forest and to each other. Paul and Mary Frances were married in 1955, and they moved with the college to the new Winston-Salem campus in 1956. He served as professor of music and university organist until his retirement in 1977, and was the organist for Wake Forest Baptist Church from 1956 to 1993. He continued accompanying Messiah until 1997.

William E. Seifert died December 26, 2006 in Campobello, South Carolina, at the age of 71. A graduate of Wofford College, he later earned a master of divinity degree from Duke University and a master of education degree from Western Carolina University; he was a United Methodist minister for many years and also taught in South Carolina public schools. After retirement he worked for the Dower Organ Building Co., builders of the organ at Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Tryon, North Carolina, where he was a member. Mr. Seifert was dean of the Spartanburg AGO chapter from 1988 to 1989, and at the time of his death was the chapter’s chaplain. He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, three sisters, and seven grandchildren.
John Edward Williams died on March 16 at his home in Spartanburg, South Carolina, after a bout with esophageal cancer. He was 87. For 43 years he had served First Presbyterian Church as organist/choirmaster and was elected an elder of the congregation. On his retirement in 1991, Converse College conferred on him the honorary degree Doctor of Music in recognition of his significant contribution to the cultural life of the community. The church further honored him in 1995 by dedicating a new Schoenstein organ, named for him, in their chapel. He had supervised the installation of the church’s large Aeolian-Skinner sanctuary organ in 1968. Recognized as a leader in church music circles, he was widely known and highly esteemed throughout his denomination and the whole region. He was especially helpful to fellow musicians of all denominations.
Dr. Williams graduated in music from Illinois Wesleyan College in 1941, joined the U.S. Navy, and served throughout World War II in London, where he played for American servicemen and, on occasion, for Queen Elizabeth and her father, King George VI. He also performed at the Glasgow Cathedral. After the war he entered the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary in New York, graduating in 1948 with an MSM degree. There he studied organ with Robert Baker and Hugh Porter, composition with Harold Friedell, and the history of music with Clarence and Helen Dickinson.
From Union he came directly to Spartanburg and set about mustering support for the founding of a local chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Success came in 1954 when he became a charter member of the new chapter and, at the same time, inaugurated the Spartanburg Oratorio Society, directing for several years its performances of major choral and orchestral masterpieces. He was known and loved for his lively sense of humor, witty repartee, and buoyant personality. He maintained high artistic standards and refined taste. He enjoyed popular music and jazz, but he never allowed these secular elements to intrude into his music for worship.
He was married to Patricia Gilmore Williams, a distinguished local artist and portraitist who predeceased him by several years. He is survived by a sister in Illinois, two married daughters, a married son, five grandchildren, and a great-grandson. A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church on March 20. Thomas Lassfolk Finch, 77, of Canton, New York, died of pancreatic cancer December 18, 2003. Born November 26, 1926, in Madison, Wisconsin, he graduated from Wisconsin High School in 1945. Attending the University of Wisconsin, he received a bachelor’s degree in 1947, a master’s degree in 1949, and a PhD in physics in 1954. He taught physics at Union College, Schenectady, New York, from 1955-1957, and then joined the faculty at St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, where he taught until his retirement in 1989. He was interested in musical acoustics and did research on pipe organ acoustics with Arthur Benade at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and with Wilson Nolle at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, publishing some of the results in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Dr. Finch became interested in the pipe organ in the 1940s, studying organ performance concurrently with his study of physics. He became a member of the American Guild of Organists in 1950, remaining a member of the St. Lawrence Valley chapter until his death. From 1990 he was a dual member of the Boston chapter, doing volunteer service at the Boston AGO Library. Dr. Finch served as organist of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Canton, New York, from 1963 to 1989. He pursued a life-long interest in historic pipe organs, serving nine years as vice-president of the Organ Historical Society. He was presented with the Society’s Distinguished Service Award in 1990, and attended 45 of the Society’s annual conventions. In 1970 he organized one of the conventions in the North Country, with Canton as the base. He also served as a committee member for the 1980 convention in Ithaca, New York, and for the 2000 convention in Boston. In recent years he and his wife took part in OHS European tours to visit organs, including France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, and most recently Sweden. He was also very interested in antique cars, and for many years was a member of the St. Lawrence chapter of the Antique Automobile Association of America. He married Frances Chilson on June 7, 1980, in the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Canton with the Rev. Max Coots officiating. Virginia R. Hebel died on January 1 in Mountain View, California. She had lived in Cupertino for 27 years, and was a dedicated area musician and choral accompanist at Los Altos High School for 20 years. Born on June 24, 1930, in Greencastle, Indiana, where her father was a professor at De Pauw University, Mrs. Hebel majored in music at De Pauw. At De Pauw she also married her college sweetheart, Chuck Hebel, her husband of nearly 51 years. A life-long church organist, Mrs. Hebel played at many local churches after moving to the Bay Area in 1976, when her husband came to Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center. In 1983, she began a long association with the choral programs of Los Altos High School, accompanying rehearsals and performances of thousands of students. Mrs. Hebel fought a long and often difficult battle against lung cancer, during which time she maintained a demanding schedule at Los Altos High School while substituting as organist at numerous churches, and serving for two years as organist at First United Methodist Church of Palo Alto. She is survived by her husband Charles Hebel, three children and seven grandchildren.

Lloyd Pfautsch died October 3, 2003, at the age of 82. Longtime professor of sacred music and director of choral activities at Southern Methodist University, he was also a widely published and performed composer. Born in 1921 in Washington, Missouri, Pfautsch received his bachelor’s degree in 1943 from Elmhurst College in Illinois and held degrees in divinity and sacred music from Union Theological Seminary. He was ordained a minister in the Evangelical and Reformed Church, but pursued a career in music. A bass-baritone, he sang with the Robert Shaw Chorale and the NBC radio chorus, and sang the title role in Mendelssohn’s Elijah throughout the country. He taught at Illinois Wesleyan University 1948-58 and then at Southern Methodist University 1958-92. At SMU he established the school’s Master of Sacred Music program offered jointly by the Perkins School of Theology and Meadows School of Music. He conducted the Meadows Chorale, Mustang Chorale and Choral Union, and for three years was associate dean of the Meadows School and chairman of the music division. Pfautsch also founded the Dallas Civic Chorus, which he directed for 25 years. He wrote three books on choral conducting, including English Diction for the Singer. Among the many honors he received during his career are honorary doctorates from Elmhurst College, Illinois Wesleyan University, and West Virginia Wesleyan University. He was selected the Meadows Distinguished Professor in 1984 and was named professor emeritus in 1992. In addition to his wife Edith, Mr. Pfautsch is survived by a daughter and three sons. A memorial service was held on October 7, 2003 at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Dallas.
