John Scott, Organist and Director of Music of St Paul’s Cathedral since 1990, has been appointed as the Organist and Director of Music at St Thomas, Fifth Avenue, New York with effect from September 2004.

John joined St Paul’s as an Assistant Organist in 1978 and was promoted to Sub-Organist in 1985. His time as Director of Music has seen the Choir of St Paul’s flourish with numerous CDs produced including, most recently, a recording of Remembrance Music for Hyperion. He has also commissioned new pieces of music for St Paul’s from some of Britain’s most prominent contemporary composers.

John recently led the Choir on a highly successful tour of the United States to venues including the National Cathedral in Washington DC and the Basilica of St Louis.

He was an Organ Scholar of St John’s College, Cambridge from 1974 – 78 and has won prestigious prizes such as the Manchester International Organ Festival (1978) and the Leipzig International J. S. Bach Competition (1984). In 1990 John was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music and in 1996 an Honorary Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians.

The Dean of St Paul’s, The Very Revd Dr John Moses, said today ‘John Scott has made a substantial contribution to worship and music-making at St Paul’s during the last twenty-five years. We wish him well in all that lies ahead.’
