William Ferris, composer, conductor, and organist, died on May 16 in Chicago, Illinois, from a massive heart attack. He was 63 years old.

 

Founder and director of the William Ferris Chorale, he died during a rehearsal with the chorale of the Verdi Requiem, which was to be performed in concert on Friday, May 19. The chorus had been singing the final section, "Libera me," when Ferris faltered, fell backward, and was helped to the floor. One of the choristers who is a physician administered CPR, but Ferris was never revived. Born in Chicago on February 26, 1937, he attended DePaul University, studying composition with Alexander Tcherepnin and organ with Arthur C. Becker. Between 1957 and 1962 he studied composition privately with Leo Sowerby. Ferris was organist at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago from 1954-58 and 1962-64, he taught at the American Conservatory of Music from 1973-83, when he resigned to become composer-in-residence and director of music at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Lakeview neighborhood. He also served as director of music at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester, NY from 1966-71. Ferris composed more than 500 works, including two operas, a dozen orchestral works, 15 chamber pieces, and well over 60 choral compositions. In 1960 he founded the William Ferris Chorale, specializing in works of 20th-century composers and often bringing them to Chicago for festival concerts of their music. Albany records has recently released a CD of Angels, an oratorio Ferris wrote and presented with his chorale in 1998. In 1992 Northwestern University established the William Ferris Archive, which contains his compositions, preliminary sketches, correspondence, and memorabilia.

 

Lester H. Groom died on March 28 in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 71. He received his early keyboard training from both of his parents, and later his father became his major professor in organ and composition at Wheaton College (Illinois), where he received the BMus in 1951. He earned the MMus in organ from Northwestern University in 1952, the Associate certificate of the AGO in 1954, and did further study with Stella Roberts at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. Mr. Groom held teaching positions at Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Blue Mountain College (Mississippi), and Baker University (Kansas). He joined the faculty of Seattle Pacific University in 1969, where he taught organ, harpsichord, music theory and composition. He retired from SPU in 1991 and was named Professor Emeritus the following year. Throughout his career he held positions as a church organist and choir director. He served as organist of First Presbyterian Church, Seattle, from 1979 until his retirement in 1996. Groom’s published works include organ and choral compositions, articles and music reviews. He was a specialist in the art of improvisation and often featured free improvisations in his organ recitals throughout the country. He was a frequent lecturer at church music workshops. For 13 summers he served on the faculty of the Evergreen Conference of Church Music, Evergreen, Colorado, and was conference president from 1972-77. He was active in the AGO throughout his career, most recently serving as regional Education Coordinator, and he prepared the study guide for the AGO Service Playing Certificate. A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church, Seattle, on April 4.

Paul R. Dickinson, 40, died August 27, 1994, at his home in Orlando, FL, following a lengthy illness. He received the BMus from Heidelberg College, Tiffin, OH, and the MMus from the University of Michigan, studying with Marilyn Mason and James Kibbie. While at Michigan he assisted the late Samuel Koontz, curator of organs at the school, and was employed to install pipe organ components for the Rodgers Organ Co. After serving as organist/music director for several churches in Michigan and Ohio, Dickinson moved to Orlando in 1986, when he was named Director of Music at St. John Lutheran Church, Winter Park. He was later appointed Organist and Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church, Kissimmee, where he established the Kirk Chamber Orchestra. He continued his interest in pipe organ construction in partnership with David McCain. In addition to maintenance and tuning in the Orlando area, the partnership installed several organs. Dickinson presented recitals in this country and in Europe. His last recital took place April 10, 1994, at the dedication of a new organ at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kissimmee. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, a founding member of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, and had served as sub-dean of the North Central Ohio AGO chapter and board member of the Central Florida AGO chapter.

Roy Andrew Johnson, Jr. (AAGO), professor of organ at the University of Arizona, was abducted, robbed and murdered on February 28, 1995, as he returned to his home in Tucson following a Faculty Showcase Recital at a retirement community in Green Valley, AZ. His brutally beaten, tuxedo-clad body was found in a desert wash four days later when helicopter searchers spotted his tuxedo from the air. His music was scattered around him. He was 58 years old. Professor Johnson studied at the Collegio di Musica di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy (1954-55), held the diploma in Sacred Music from the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago (organ performance with Preston Rockholt and Robert Rayfield), earned the BMus with Robert Noehren, MMus with Robert Glasgow and the DMA with Marilyn Mason, all in organ performance at the University of Michigan. He was professor of organ at the University of Arizona for 29 years where he taught organ, music theory and counterpoint and where he was also director of graduate studies in music for eight years, a position in which he advised all graduate students in music. Johnson recently oversaw the installation of a 29-rank Schoenstein organ in a new University of Arizona organ recital hall and performed the dedication recital. He served as organist and organist-choir master in several churches over the course of 40 years as a church musician.

Enrique Alberto Arias, 63, died on December 1, 2004, at Weiss Memorial Hospital, Chicago. Survived by close friends and colleagues, there are no immediate family survivors. A musicologist, Dr. Arias was associate professor at DePaul University's School of New Learning, and president of Ars Musica Chicago.

The son of Enrique (the Consul General of Panama in Chicago) and Jeanne Arias, Enrique Arias was born April 26, 1941 in Chicago. He received a bachelor of music in piano performance from the DePaul University School of Music, a master of arts in musicology from the University of Chicago, and in 1971, a Ph.D. in music history and literature from Northwestern University. Dr. Arias was a faculty member, and later president, of the Chicago Conservatory of Music. He then served as chairman of Humanities and Graduate Studies at the American Conservatory of Music, and in 1993 began his tenure at DePaul. Arias was also a member of the American Musicological Society, and throughout his career he was a keynote speaker at numerous conferences on Latin American music.

As a researcher and writer, Dr. Arias traveled yearly to churches, archives and libraries around the world. His many publications include The Masses of Sebastian de Vivanco (circa 1550-1622): A Study of Polyphonic Settings of the Ordinary in Late Renaissance Spain (University Microfilms, 1971), Alexander Tcherepnin: A Bio-Bibliography (Greenwood Press, 1989), and Comedy in Music: A Historical Bibliographical Resource Guide (Greenwood Press, 2001). He was one of four editors of Essays in Honor of John F. Ohl: A Compendium of American Musicology (Northwestern University Press, 2001), and one of his most significant publications was the edition of Three Masses by Sebastian de Vivanco (A-R Editions, circa 1978). Arias also had numerous articles published in music journals, including Music Review, Tempo, Perspectives of New Music, Anuario Musical, Lituanus (The Lithuanian Quarterly), and the Latin American Music Review. His final two articles were "Maps and Music: How the Bounding Confidence of the Elizabethan Age Was Celebrated in a Madrigal by Weelkes" (published in the winter 2003-04 edition of Early Music America), and "Jules Massenet, French Cantatas for a Martyr, and Vincentian Composers" (published in the September 2004 issue of The Diapason).

As a pianist, Arias was most active in the 1970s and 1980s, performing regionally at many venues including Preston Bradley Hall, and internationally with the late soprano Dahlia Kucenas at concert halls throughout Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, and South America. He also served as president of Ars Musica Chicago, an early music ensemble, a position he held since 1988.

A memorial service took place December 12, 2004 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Chicago, and a concert was given in his memory on January 9, 2005, also at St. Vincent de Paul Church. Contributions may be made in his memory to Ars Musica Chicago, P.O. Box  A-3279, Chicago, IL 60690.

Lois Rhea Land, 88, long-time teacher, composer, author, and mentor to many music educators throughout Texas, died December 9, 2004, of complications from a fall a year and a half ago that left her paralyzed. Born in Milton, Kansas, she was a child prodigy in piano and received music degrees from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. From 1945 to 1964 she taught music in the Corpus Christi, Texas public schools, and served as a judge and clinician throughout the southwest. A founding member of the Texas Choral Directors Association in 1950, she also collaborated with many conductors and singers as accompanist for the Texas All-State Choir in the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1964 she joined the music faculty at Southern Methodist University, where she taught music education and supervised the graduate music education division until 1980. From 1980-88 she served as adjunct professor of music education at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth. A church organist from an early age, she served Dallas congregations as organist and choir director, including Northaven and Munger Place United Methodist Churches, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Rockwall.

Her numerous choral compositions were published by Plymouth, Southern Music, Bourne, Edwin Morris, Mark Foster, and Lawson-Gould, and was the co-author of numerous college and choral music textbooks. Most recent publications include several volumes of sight-reading materials and techniques published by Alliance Music Company in Houston, and A Cappella Songs Without Words (AMC).

She is survived by one daughter, Christina Harmon, of Dallas, Texas, and three grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Perkins Chapel, Southern Methodist University, December 27, 2004.

Charles Wilson McManis died December 3, 2004, in South Burlington, Vermont, after suffering a fall at his home the evening before. He was born March 17, 1913, in Kansas City, Kansas, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Bridge McManis, an elder brother and a younger sister. He is survived by his second wife, Judith Fisher McManis of South Burlington, two sons and a daughter.

Mr. McManis grew up in a musical family. At age three, sitting in church with his mother (his father was choir director), he was fascinated by the sounds of the organ, and remembered humming its very high pitches. At age twelve he experimented with making wood and metal organ pipes from fruit crates and coffee cans. As a teenager he constructed an organ with four ranks of pipes that he installed in the family's finished attic. He completed studies at the University of Kansas in 1936 with a BA degree, specializing in theoretical courses useful to an organbuilder. Following this, in 1937, was a bachelor of music degree in composition and organ performance. While at the university, he apprenticed during vacations with an organ factory representative, repairing, voicing and tuning organs. On graduation he set up shop in Kansas City, Kansas, building or rebuilding half a dozen organs before Pearl Harbor and WWII halted U.S. organbuilding.

In April, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training at Camp Roberts, California, he was retained to teach organists of the nine regimental chapels, and was assigned to 11th Regimental Chapel. The following year he was shipped overseas with the 221st General Hospital to Chalon-sur-Marne, France, ninety miles east of Paris. At war's end, he returned to Kansas City, where he married Charlotte Bridge on June 9, 1946.

At McManis Organs, Charles and his staff would build, renovate or restore more than one hundred thirty-five organs for churches, homes and universities throughout the USA over the next five decades. Because of his musical training, he was one of the first organbuilders who could actually play much of the literature written for the organ. His passion was to design and voice instruments suited to play this great variety of music. Even his smallest organs encouraged exploration of the rich and colorful repertoire available.

His ability at pipe voicing was legendary among his peers. Over the years, he wrote extensively, mentored younger organbuilders and conducted several clinics to teach others about his voicing "secrets." He was a founding member of the American Institute of Organbuilders.

Retiring (theoretically) in June, 1986, McManis moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Charlotte, who died of cancer four months after their arrival. He stayed on in California, occasionally tuning and repairing organs, and hiking in Yosemite and the Sierras. In July 1989, a Connecticut tornado that heavily damaged the McManis organ at St. John's Episcopal Church, Waterbury, Connecticut, took Charles McManis out of retirement, calling him east to replace 35 of 60 ranks in his Opus 35, first installed in 1957. Due to the extensive damage to the building, as well as the organ, several parishioners were appointed to coordinate a variety of repair programs, including Judith Fisher who was to oversee the organ restoration. After working together for eighteen months, she and Charles were married November 2, 1991. He continued working with organs in Connecticut, acting as consultant and overseeing the installation or restoration of several instruments in the area. He served as curator of the organ at St. John's for just over 10 years.

In 2001, Charles and Judith moved to Vermont. He was able to complete work on his autobiography just days before his death. A "Celebration of Charles' Life" took place January 8 at The Cathedral Church of St. Paul (Episcopal) in Burlington. Donations may be made to the Music Ministry of St. Paul's.

Henry August “Hank” Elling died October 10, 2010, in Catawba, North Carolina, at the age of 85. He was music director and principal organist at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Rockford, Illinois for 36 years. Born into a long line of Lutheran pastors, he first played the organ at age 15, for his sister’s wedding. Following service in the Philippines in World War II, he earned a bachelor’s degree in organ and piano from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, a master’s from Wayne State University, and worked toward a Ph.D. at the University of Southern California. Elling served as choir director at Chicago’s Luther North High School, where the award-winning choirs concertized in Europe and sang at Christmas programs organized by Mayor Richard Daley. He was a longtime member of the Rockford AGO chapter. Henry August Elling is survived by his wife of 50 years, Martha, sons Henry J. (Cathy), Kurt A. (Jennifer), daughter Suzanne (Rev. Gregory) Alms, brother Rev. Norman (Selma) Elling, daughter-in-law Kerry Osley Elling, and grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Gilbert Mead died November 25, 2010 of complications from congestive heart failure at his home at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, Illinois, at the age of 83. He was well known particularly in the Chicago area for his involvement as a musician on WMBI, the flagship station of the Moody Radio Network.
Born April 4, 1927, Mead began playing as a church organist when just a boy in his hometown of Battle Creek, Michigan. His fascination with pipe organs led him to seeking books on organbuilding from libraries some distance from Battle Creek. He particularly remembered the E. M. Skinner organ (Opus 720, 1928) at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, where his first piano teacher was the church’s organist. Battle Creek had many E. M. Skinner instruments of this period (1928–1932), with installations at the Kellogg Auditorium, St. Phillip Catholic Church, and St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Mead’s first organ lessons were at St. Thomas. He recalled the impeccable pedal technique of their organist who, according to his memory, played in highly polished white shoes that showed no sign of scuffing between the feet.
Gilbert Mead earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at the American Conservatory, where he studied with Leo Sowerby, Stella Roberts, Irwin Fischer, and Bruno Glade, and a master’s in organ performance from Northwestern University, where his instructors included Barrett Spach, Richard Enright, and Grigg Fountain.
Mead came to Chicago to study at the Moody Bible Institute in 1945 and gradually became involved at WMBI. Upon completion of a course in Biblical studies, he became a full-time staff musician, working in radio from 1950–1962. He logged thousands of hours in varied programming as a solo organist, pianist, accompanist, and director of various choirs. In 1962 Donald Hustad invited him to join the Sacred Music Department of Moody Bible Institute when the trend in radio was away from “live” music toward pre-recorded music. He joined a faculty with some renowned organists—Donald Hustad, Robert Rayfield, Lillian Robinson, Lester Groom, and Preston Rockholt.
Mead was known for his polished performance style at the organ, and was revered by a host of fine students on both piano and organ. He had a passion for providing engaging and sympathetic accompaniment to congregational singing. His approach caused one colleague to quip that Gilbert Mead always “played the words”.
Mead served four churches in the Chicago area over a period of about 55 years: Judson Baptist Church in Oak Park (1950–1968), First Baptist Church of Elmhurst (1968–1973), Wheaton Bible Church (1973–1989), and College Church in Wheaton (1990–1996). He filled the dual role of organist-choirmaster at Judson Baptist and First Baptist Churches. At Judson Baptist, he oversaw a large rebuilding of the church’s original Estey organ (10 ranks) into a much larger 3-manual organ with 31 ranks of new pipework from Aeolian-Skinner (Opus 1466). He finished his church music career as organist for five years at the College Church in Wheaton, where he served as consultant for the installation of the new 3-manual Schantz (1992).
Mead was well respected in the Chicago area for his conscientious work as an organbuilder and restorer. His weekends, apart from Moody Bible Institute and his church work, were filled with service calls to dozens of Chicago-area churches and colleges in tuning and in some rebuilding work. There are a handful of organs in the Chicago region bearing the nameplate “MEAD AND SONS, Elmhurst, Illinois.” His work in maintaining the historic Reuter organ at Moody Memorial Church was well on display when that organ was a featured instrument in the events held by the Romantic Organ Music Symposium in the summer of 1988. In preparation for a recital by Robert Glasgow when the weather had been extremely hot, and in an un-air-conditioned church, Mead managed to keep the organ in tune, to the delight of all.
Gilbert Mead is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha (Jennison), four sons: Stephen (Marjorie Lamp), Robert (Connie Blaschke), David (Brenda Simms), and Donald (Karen Sarasin); and a sister Beverly (Mead) Todd.
Donald Mead

Andrew Seivewright, master of music at Carlisle Cathedral for more than 30 years, died December 10, 2010, at age 84. He served as cathedral master of music from 1960 to 1991. He founded the Abbey Singers in 1962 and took the group on tours throughout Europe and the USA. He was an established composer whose latest choral CD, If Winter Comes, was released last year. He was also a pianist, organist and conductor.
Following his retirement, Seivewright was organist at Crosthwaite Church in Keswick for four years and then, from 1994, at Grasmere. The son of a clergyman, he began playing the organ when he was 10 years old. He studied at Denstone College before going on to read classics at King’s College, Cambridge. In World War II he joined the RAF, training as a navigator in Canada. After the war he returned to Cambridge and studied music. He and his wife Nora lived in Yorkshire, where he had teaching posts, and then, in 1960, they moved to Carlisle. In June 2010 a concert was held to mark Seivewright’s 50 years as a church musician.

Herman Berlinski
died at the age of 91 on September 27 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in
Washington, after suffering a heart attack and a stroke. His considerable
output included symphonic and chamber works, concertos, song cycles, liturgical
works, as well as music for the organ, which he learned to play at age 40.
Religiously inspired works, such as the oratorios Job and The Trumpets of
Freedom and the organ work The Burning Bush, were among his best known works.
Dr. Berlinski, who fled Nazi Germany in 1933, settled in Washington 30 years
later to become music director at the Washington Hebrew Congregation, a post he
held until 1977. He began his musical career as a pianist, but performed and
recorded on the organ throughout the world well into advanced age. He was
represented by Lilian Murtagh and then Murtagh-McFarlane artist management from
1976-78. Berlinski was a piano graduate of the Leipzig Conservatory of
Music. He moved to Paris in 1933 and composed music for the ballet and the
Yiddish theatre, and studied composition with Nadia Boulanger and Alfred
Cortot. He left Europe in 1941 to live in New York. There he earned the MMus at
Columbia University and a doctorate in composition at the Jewish Theological
Seminary, and served as organist at Temple Emanuel for eight years. His
collection of scores, recordings, correspondence and photographs was given to
the Library of Congress last summer.

Robert Hunter died
on September 10 in Los Angeles at the age of 72. He was accompanist for the
Roger Wagner Chorale and for the Paul Salamunovich choral groups, as well as a
pianist with various groups. Hunter began his career with Wagner in 1946 and
worked with the chorale for a decade. In 1955 he began performing with popular
music groups, including the Freddy Martin Orchestra at the Ambassador Hotel's Coconut Grove, and was Carol Channing's musical director from 1958 to 1971. Hunter later joined Salamunovich to tour with his choruses from Loyola Marymount University and became organist for the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Choir. In 1991 he became accompanist for the Los Angeles Master Chorale and remained with the chorale until his retirement in 1996.

Howard B. Kelsey,
professor emeritus from Washington University, died September 18 of heart
failure at the age of 90. Following his wife's death in 1997, Mr. Kelsey
had returned to St. Louis where he lived for the past four years. Born in 1911
and raised in Brighton, Illinois, Howard Kelsey began playing the organ at age
5 and took his first church position at age 14. He graduated from Illinois
Wesleyan University in 1933, and went to New York for graduate study at Union
Theological Seminary under Clarence Dickinson. Upon receiving a Master of
Sacred Music degree, he returned to St. Louis where he taught at Eden Seminary
for six years. In 1937 he married Berenice Strobeck, his wife of sixty years.
Howard Kelsey's association with Washington University began in 1945 when
he became the university organist. He was primarily responsible for the
establishment of the Department of Music in 1947, having secured an endowment
for the department from Avis Blewett. During his time at Washington University,
he brought in internationally known artists to conduct classes and work with
the many organists who came to the University. Students had the opportunity to
work with Anton Heiller, Roslyn Turek, Gillian Weir, Geraint Jones, Suzie
Jeans, Michael Schneider, and the Gregorian chant expert Dom Ermin Virty, OSB.
Many of his students found positions in colleges, universities, and large
churches after completing their degrees under Mr. Kelsey's guidance. In
addition to his work at Washington University, Kelsey also served a number of
St. Louis churches and temples from 1936 to 1973, including First
Congregational Church, Second Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Temple
B'Nai El and Temple Israel. He was also very active in the American Guild
of Organists on the local, regional, and national levels, and served as
consultant for many churches for the purchase and installation of new organs. A
memorial service was held for Howard Kelsey on October 21 at Christ Church
Cathedral in St. Louis, Missouri. He is survived by his three children and four
grandchildren.

Roland Münch
died on September 27 in Berlin, Germany. He was born in Leipzig on February 10,
1936, and studied organ with Diethard Hellmann and Robert Köbler. His
first professional position was at St. Wenzel's Church in Naumburg where
he played the historic organ built by Hildebrandt. From 1975 on, he made many
recordings and radio broadcasts. From 1969 until his retirement in March of
this year, Mr. Münch was organist and music director at the Church of Glad
Tidings (Kirche zur frohen Botschaft) in Berlin-Karlshorst where he presided
over the organ built by Peter Migendt in 1756 for Princess Amalia, sister of
Frederick the Great for whom C.P.E. Bach served as court musician from
1738-67. Münch is survived by his wife Ursula and two sons. His most
recent recording, Münch spielt Bach auf Migendt, is on the Ursus label.

 

Robert Murphy died
on September 22 in Traverse City, Michigan. Born on April 30, 1936, in Benton
Harbor, Michigan, Murphy earned bachelor's and master's degrees
from Western Michigan University. In 1962 he became a member of the Interlochen
Arts Academy Charter Faculty and was chairperson of the keyboard department for
many years prior to his recent retirement. At Western Michigan University, he
had served as director of the chapel choir, graduate assistant and instructor
of music. During his 39 years at Interlochen, he was chairperson of the
building committee for Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall, founder and organizer
of the ICA Chapel Organ Recital Series, and chairperson of the music building
committee for ICA. For nearly four decades he was organist and music director
for Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. A service celebrating Mr.
Murphy's life took place on October 14 at Central United Methodist Church
in Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Interlochen Center
for the Arts Organ Scholarship Fund in memory of Robert Henderson Murphy.

Vernon de Tar died on October 7 in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, at the age of 94. He was organist and choirmaster at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Greenwich Village for 42 years, and had taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale University, and the Juilliard School. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he studied piano and organ at Syracuse University, graduating in 1927, and continued studies with Franklin Cannon, David McK. Williams and Fernando Germani. He was appointed organist and choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church in New York in 1932 and moved to the Church of the Ascension in 1939. There he oversaw the installation of a Holtkamp organ, established a notable sacred music program and a concert series. Dr. de Tar taught at the Juilliard School from 1947 to 1982, the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary 1945-72, and at the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University 1975-78. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists, the Association of Anglican Musicians, and the Hymn Society of America. After his retirement from the Church of the Ascension in 1981, he served as a substitute organist at several churches in Pennsylvania and continued to teach privately.

Michael R. Israel died on September 14 following a lengthy illness. Born on October 23, 1962, in North Carolina, he began his musical studies at the University of Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music and earned a degree in organ performance at the University of Louisville. He served as organist and director of music at churches in Cincinnati and in the Kentuckiana area, including Jefferstown Christian Church, Christ Evangelical United Church of Christ, St. John United Presbyterian Church, and Anchorage Presbyterian Church. He also played oboe and English horn, as well as singing baritone in various choral groups. Mr. Israel joined the staff of Miller Pipe Organ Company, Louisville, Kentucky, in 1988, first on a part-time basis while a college student, and later full-time as a technician and eventually service department manager. In that capacity, he had charge of scheduling quarterly visits throughout a ten state area as well as being a tuning team leader. He was a member of the American Institute of Organbuilders, the American Guild of Organists, and the Organ Historical Society. In 1993, he was selected as an E. Power Biggs Fellow by the OHS for the national convention in Louisville and Southern Indiana. He also performed as a recitalist at the convention, playing an 1879 organ by Koehnken & Grimm.

Robert Rayfield died on October 18 in Bloomington, Indiana, at the age of 79. He was professor emeritus of music at Indiana University, an international concert organist, and a church musician. Born April 15, 1920 in Selma, Alabama, he studied at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, where he won the Conservatory Commencement Contest, the Van Dusen Organ Club Scholarship, and the Society of American Musicians Contest. He was later awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for study in Paris, France with Rolande Falcinelli and Jean Langlais. While in Europe, he traveled extensively, playing recitals and studying organ design. After returning from Europe he earned the Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He was a P51 pilot in the U.S. Air Force and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He concertized extensively and had made several recordings. Before his appointment to Indiana University in 1963, he served as Chairman of the organ department at Moody Bible Institute and organist of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chicago. He retired from Indiana in 1990. He was known especially for his performances of the music of Leo Sowerby and Jean Langlais, and had written articles for The Diapason, The American Organist, and Clavier. Dr. Rayfield was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Association of Anglican Musicians, and continued as organist of Trinity Episcopal Church, Bloomington, at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Platt Rayfield, two sons, one sister, and one grandson. A Requiem Eucharist was celebrated on October 22 at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Philip Hahn, the immediate past president of the American Guild of Organists, died peacefully at his home in San Francisco, California on April 13, 2003, from complications of myelofibrosis, a disease of the bone marrow. From 1992 to 2002, he was a member of the AGO National Council and served as president from 1998 to 2002.

Hahn received bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Michigan where he studied with Marilyn Mason and Robert Noehren, and earned a DMA in composition and organ performance from the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, studying with Stella Roberts and Robert Lodine. He received certificates in organ, composition, and solfeggio from the Conservatoire Americain, Fontainebleau, France, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger and André Marchal, and held the AAGO certificate.

During his career, he was an associate professor of music at the University of Northern Iowa, where he oversaw the installation of a large four-manual organ built by Robert Noehren, and was director of music at Waterloo's First United Methodist Church. After moving to California, Hahn served as director of music at the First Presbyterian Church in Palo Alto for several years before being appointed artistic director of the San Francisco Boys Chorus. He played many recitals on notable instruments and was a featured recitalist, workshop leader, and adjudicator at many AGO conventions.

Philip Hahn was also a professional chef, holding the position of sous chef at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco, later running his own restaurant, Fanny's, in San Francisco. For several years Hahn ran the restaurant and served as organist at the First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, returning exclusively to church music in 1980. From 1990 until his death, Hahn served as organist-choirmaster at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ross, California.

Dr. Hahn's compositions include sacred anthems, pieces for trumpet and organ including The Trumpet Sings Thanksgiving; Spiritual; Fanfare for Five Trumpets and Organ; and two large concerted works: Fantasy for Orchestra and Acclamations! A Fanfare for Concert Band. For the organ, he wrote several short hymn-based compositions plus larger works including Sonata for Organ; Songs from the Forest: A Suite for Organ and Synthesizer; and Suite for Organ Celesta, Vibraharp, and Timpani. His Sonata for Violin and Piano was the recipient of a Sigma Alpha Iota Prize. His short ballet The Dance in the Desert was fully staged at both the First Presbyterian Church, Palo Alto, and at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ross.

He is survived by his partner of 29 years Norman Nagao, two sisters, and a number of nephews and nieces. A memorial service was held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ross, California, on May 4.

Richard L. Johnson, 61, of Buffalo, New York, and East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, died on December 6, 2002, in Buffalo. Dr. Johnson was professor of humanities at Medaille College, Buffalo, joining the faculty in 1984. An accomplished musician and dedicated educator, he was known for his innovative theatre and music classes. He also directed numerous stage productions and was named the college's Professor of the Year for 2000-2001.

Dr. Johnson was born on May 17, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas. Upon receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Trinity University of San Antonio in 1963, he went on to earn his Master of Music degree from Yale University in 1965. He spent 1966-67 in Copenhagen, Denmark, on a Fulbright Scholarship, studying organ with Finn Viderø. Returning to the United States, he held faculty positions at Wake Forest University, Amherst College, Smith College, and the University of Maine. In 1973, he graduated from the University of Michigan with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. In 1992, he received a National Endowment for the Humanities award to study theatre at Columbia University, and at the time of his death he was pursuing a post-doctoral Master's degree in Theatre at SUNY-Buffalo.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Johnson performed organ recitals at venues across the country, including the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, and St. Thomas Church in New York City. Several of his recordings aired on National Public Radio stations throughout the country. He is survived by his parents, a sister, brother, nieces and nephews, and his long-time partner, Richard LaBorde of East Longmeadow.

Richard Eugene Livesay died on February 24 at the age of 87. A resident of Alexandria, Virginia, he was organist at Cherrydale United Methodist Church in Arlington from 1947 to 1988, when he was named organist emeritus. At that church he had played for more than 2,000 Sunday services, 600 weddings, and countless funerals, and helped design the church's Wicks pipe organ of 37 ranks. He was a former Dean of the Alexandria AGO chapter and was a guest organist at Washington National Cathedral. Born in Tulsa, he began piano study at age 12 and organ at age 16, and he attended Blackburn College in Illinois, Park College in Missouri, and American University. In the late 1930s, he worked for Jenkins Music Co. and demonstrated Hammond organs at churches around Tulsa. Mr. Livesay was also a Defense Department official from 1940 until retiring in 1973 as staff secretary to the secretary of defense. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Veradell Elliott Livesay, two children, and five grandchildren.

Dale Wood died on April 13 after a valiant battle against esophageal and lung cancer, at his Sea Ranch, California home. A renowned composer, organist and choral director, he was known for his numerous published choral works and hymn tunes, and his compositions for handbells, harp, and organ. He was for many years organist and choirmaster in San Francisco at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin and served in a similar capacity in Lutheran churches in Hollywood and Riverside, California. He had published numerous articles on worship, liturgy, and church music, and was a contributing editor to the Journal of Church Music for over a decade. His monthly column appeared in the Methodist journal Music Ministry for three years. Wood headed the publications committee of Choristers Guild from 1970-74. After serving as music director of the Grace Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco (1973-74), he was appointed executive director for The Sacred Music Press, a position he held from 1975-96, and was editor emeritus 1996-2001. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) honored Dale Wood annually since 1967 for his "very important contribution towards the creation and development of contemporary American Music." The Board of Regents of California Lutheran University awarded Dale Wood the title of "Exemplar of the University," citing him as "an example of excellence in service and a worthy model of a good and useful life."
