Louis Patterson Announced Vice President and Factory Superintendent

Jack Bethards, president of Schoenstein & Co., organ builders of San Francisco, has announced the apointment of Louis Patterson as vice president and factory superintendent, succeeding Robert Rhodes who retired after 24 years of service. Louis Patterson will be responsible for all factory and field operations of the company as well as serving as technical director.

Jack C. Goode died
on January 10 at Mather Pavilion nursing home in Evanston, Illinois, at the age
of 80. He had served as organist and choir director at Lake Street Church
(formerly First Baptist Church) of Evanston for 33 years, prior to his
retirement in 1986. Born in Marlin, Texas, Mr. Goode moved to the Chicago area
in 1946. He earned degrees from Baylor University in 1942 and the American
Conservatory of Music in 1947, and also studied at the University of Tulsa with
composer Bela Rozsa. Mr. Goode taught organ and composition at Wheaton College,
the American Conservatory of Music, and Northwestern University, and was a past
Dean of the North Shore AGO chapter. In 1964, he published Pipe Organ
Registration, a book that was printed in three languages. He was the composer
of many works for choir, piano, chamber ensemble, orchestra, and organ,
including Improvisations on Hymn Tunes (Hope), Magnificat (Abingdon),
Processional (Abingdon), Preludes on Hymn Tunes (Hope), Fancy for the Trumpet
Stop (Gray), Seven Communion Meditations (Flammer), Thirty-four Changes on Hymn
Tunes (Gray), and many works in manuscript. His first wife, Gertrude Kaiser,
died in 1963. His second wife, Ruth Hendry, died in 1988. In 1992 Mr. Goode
moved into a retirement home in Evanston.

Lawrence L. Schoenstein, age 85, died on December 27, 2001, at his home in San Rafael, California. A fourth generation member of the famous organ building family, he became fascinated with the craft as a child helping his grandfather in the factory after school. Lawrence loved to recall that his grandfather would plane some aromatic cedar lumber, producing long, curled-up shavings which he hung over the boy's ears. He also remembered fondly sitting at the organ bench with
his Aunt Cecilia while she played for high mass at the family's parish
church. It was soon obvious to everyone that Lawrence would be single-minded in
his pursuit of an organ-building career.

After high school at St. Joseph's, he was graduated
from San Francisco's prestigious Lick-Wilmerding School in 1934 and
joined the family firm learning every phase of organ building from his father
and uncles. He also built a small organ on his own at the family home. For the
next 22 years he was responsible for numerous installations, renovations, and
participated in the design and tonal finishing of many of the firm's new
organs.

The company did a great deal of the West Coast work for
major eastern organ builders and Lawrence became acquainted with every style of
instrument. He assisted James B. Jamison with many Austin projects and did work
for Aeolian-Skinner. A major career opportunity occured when he was called to
work with G. Donald Harrison on the finishing of additions to the Grace
Cathedral organ. He had been recommended by Stanley Williams, Western
representative of Aeolian-Skinner. Obviously Mr. Harrison was impressed, for
shortly thereafter Lawrence re-ceived an offer to join the Aeolian-Skinner
company. His father, who had worked for E.M. Skinner in the early part of the
century, encouraged him to do so.

Lawrence was West Coast representative of Aeolian-Skinner
from 1956 through 1972 when the company ceased operations. During that time he
handled the negotiations, participated in the design, installed and tonal
finished over 70 Aeolian-Skinner projects, developing a reputation for
installations of unparalleled detail of finish both mechanical and tonal. Organ
builders still marvel at the level of perfection achieved in each of his
meticulously polished installations. This is especially significant because
Aeolian-Skinner organs at that time were not erected at the factory. All
winding, wiring, and structural fitting was done on the job. His depth of
experience was also called upon at the factory where he helped solve difficult
technical problems and served as a troubleshooter on many jobs all over the
United States. Always inventive, Lawrence handled many research and development
projects for Aeolian-Skinner.

In 1971 he returned to the family firm in San Francisco and
was instrumental in assuring its continuation by arranging the transfer to new
ownership in 1977 and agreeing to stay on as master organ builder. He was
responsible for artistic and tonal design until his retirement in 1984. His
cultivated good taste, both visual and musical, made a significant contribution
to each project. He served as senior advisor to the firm for the rest of his
life. In retirement, he continued to practice the crafts he had learned and
never ceased his study of the art and science of the pipe organ. Throughout his
life, he maintained a positive, progressive, forward-looking attitude toward
the instrument tempered by a deep respect for tradition. He always searched for
perfection.

Lawrence Schoenstein was married for 40 years to Mary Anne
McMahon. He leaves three children (Terrence P. Schoenstein, organ builder of
Hawaii; twin sisters, Viole McMahon and Celeste Ingram) and five grandchildren.
He is survived also by his second wife, Nora Machi, four brothers (one a
Franciscan priest), and three sisters (one a Dominican sister).

The Anatomy of an Installation
The installation of a new organ is a time of mystery for many clients. Although we have provided much information and site preparation details, when the delivery day actually arrives there is usually surprise expressed at the giant pile of material that now fills their entire church. Once the unloading is completed, the next question is “How will we have worship on Sunday with all of this stuff in the way?” I answer, “Most of it will be in by the weekend!,” but they seldom believe me. As Sunday approaches and church members begin to see the pews and floor revealed once more, the easy-to-see progress of installing large components causes a contradictory view: church members now believe the new organ will completed very soon, since the assembly has been so swift. After realizing that the intricate work of winding, wiring, and tonal finishing is yet to be completed, they eagerly wait to hear the first sounds of their new instrument.
The straightforward nature of the installation at the TMI Chapel is a perfect venue to demonstrate the process of an organ installation. From the main floor of the chapel that was cleared for the arrival of the organ parts through the completion of the organ, these pictures will walk you through the day-by-day process of installing a pipe organ.

Taking part in building an organ for General Douglas MacArthur’s Alma Mater had a special meaning for me. To those of us on the West Coast, the war in the Pacific seemed to be very close to home. Even as a small boy, I remember the pervasive talk of possible attack. Submarines were sighted, gas masks issued, blackouts ordered—all both fascinating and frightening. Spirits were lifted with constant talk of victory. I remember even cutting out a paper “V” for our Christmas tree! All hopes were pinned on our hero of the Pacific, General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur. The General always gave credit for both his career and his faith to the classical education, discipline, and daily chapel services of The Texas Military Institute, which he entered in 1893 at age 13.
The General did bring us victory and then served through the occupation and again in Korea with brilliance and dedication. In 1951, when he returned home, I remember going with my mother to the City and joining my father to watch from his office window as MacArthur came up California Street in a huge Packard touring car amid what was the most spectacular ticker tape parade in San Francisco history. He represented the forces under his command who saved us. At the time it was an exciting event. In memory, it is very moving.
Most of us know of MacArthur’s famous “Duty, Honor, Country” and “Old Soldiers” speeches, but I would like to quote from the first radio speech given right after V-J Day, for it is especially appropriate as we dedicate this organ to his memory, with the hope that its music will help in forming a foundation of faith for future leaders.
Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. A great victory has been won. . . . The entire world is quietly at
peace. . . Man since the beginning of time has sought peace, (but) military alliances, balances of power, leagues of nations, all in turn failed, leaving the only path to be by way of the crucible of war. . . . If we do not now devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door. The problem basically is theological and involves a spiritual recrudescence and improvement of human character that will synchronize with our almost matchless advances in science, art, literature and all material and cultural developments of the past two thousand years. It must be of the spirit if we are to save the flesh.

Tonal Design Notes
The TMI tonal design contains all of the elements that we feel are absolutely necessary in a moderate-sized church organ—an instrument affordable by the average church that is serious about its music. I hasten to point out that this is not a symphonic organ—and purposely so. The dynamic and color range of a symphonic organ is a marvelous advantage, especially for intricate or transcribed accompaniments, large-scale Romantic repertoire, orchestral transcriptions, and improvisations. However, for many music programs a more traditional approach is not only fully adequate, but preferred. This stoplist is based on a survey of TMI’s specific musical requirements, which match those of many mainline churches.
Here are the 10 design points that, in our system, must be represented in a church organ of this size:
1. Great and Swell equally balanced in power, with the two primary elements of tonal power, diapason and trumpet, disposed opposite one another for contrast. Usually diapason tone is dominant in the Great, trumpet tone under expression in the Swell.
2. Variety of diapason tone. Although not dominant, diapason tone must not be overlooked in the Swell. In this organ, the Swell Horn Diapason is distinctly different from the Great Open, being of narrow mouth and slotted construction. This organ has the luxury of an independent Pedal Open Diapason as well. The Great includes a chorus of 4′ Principal, 2′ Fifteenth and 11⁄3′ Mixture, all under expression. The complementary upperwork for the Swell Horn Diapason is the 4′ Gemshorn, which is a mildly tapered principal, extended 12 pipes to form a Fifteenth.
3. Variety of reed tone. In addition to a conical chorus stop (trumpet), a double taper color stop (oboe) and a cylindrical color stop (clarinet) should be included to provide the three major reed qualities most often needed in church work.
4. True string and celeste tone. Genuine strings scaled narrow enough to give a “rosin on the bow” effect are a vital and often neglected element of tonal contrast to the wider-scaled diapasons and flutes.
5. A contrasting ethereal voice with celeste. In this case we selected our very strongly tapered Corno Dolce, which is a hybrid stop in that mysterious tonal ground between flute and string. Maximum use is assured when these stops are placed opposite the strings in an expressive Great.
6. Stopped and semi-open flutes of contrasting tone. This organ has a stopped metal flute, a stopped wood flute, and a very narrow-scaled chimney flute that is much like the traditional German and English Lieblich Gedeckts.
7. An open flute of solo quality. A moderate-scale Harmonic Flute was chosen; being in a prominent position outside the expression box, it is capable of balancing with full accompaniments and can stand up to the Trumpet.
8. A robust Pedal with 16′ stops from each major tonal family. This organ includes a large-scale open stop of wood, a small-scale open stop of metal, a stopped wood flute, and a full-length trumpet.
9. Independent expression for the Swell and Great, with only major foundational and solo stops unexpressive. Unenclosed stops on a small organ are a luxury.
10. Full coupling and careful use of unification. These devices are to be used with discretion by the organist to increase musical flexibility. This organ includes a Great to Swell coupler so that all enclosed stops may be played against the future unenclosed, high pressure Grand Trumpet.

Earl V. Kelone, 82, of Little Rock, Arkansas, died on May 10 from a stroke. He was born on November 18, 1919 in Little Rock and was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church, where he served as organist and choir director for 48 years. He also served as treasurer of the Central Arkansas AGO chapter for several years, and was an Army veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Kelone is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gertrude Kelone, a daughter, a brother, a sister, and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Msgr. Allen Trust Fund, c/o Our Lady of the Holy Souls Church, 1003 N. Tyler St., Little Rock, AR 72205; or St. Joseph's Endowment Fund, 1115 College Ave., Conway, AR 72032.

 

Frederick A. Lake, age 72, died on June 28 at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco, California, after a lengthy illness. Fred served as senior voicer at Schoenstein & Co., San Francisco, where was employed since 1981. In his 21 years of dedicated service to the company, he was a major contributor in developing their American Romantic tonal style. He carried out numerous voicing research and development projects based on the firm's studies in France, Germany and England, and conducted numerous tonal experiments toward the creation of new stops such as the Schoenstein Symphonic Flute. Fred also took part in tuning and tonal finishing activities.

According to members of his family, Fred developed a passionate interest in the pipe organ and its music as he grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He studied organ in school and college and held posts as a church organist through much of his career. His organ work started with an apprencticeship at the firm of Rudolf von Beckerath in Hamburg, Germany. His training was primarily in flue voicing. In 1958 he joined John Shawhan, the Casavant representative in Saginaw, Michigan, where he took part in the installation and finishing of many new Casavant organs as well as rebuilding projects and tuning. In 1968, Fred joined the Berghaus Organ Company in Bellwood, Illinois, where he served as voicer and handled other organ building, rebuilding, and service responsibilities until moving to San Francisco and joining the Schoenstein organization. He was a member of the American Institute of Organbuilders.

Fred Lake was highly respected by co-workers and clients alike. He was a gentlemanly, soft-spoken, and learned colleague with extensive interests and knowledge in a wide range of scientific subjects. His thorough dedication to the study of pipe organ tone made him a valued member of the pipe organ community. He is survived by his sister Ruth Ann Saunders of Kirkland, Washington.

Robert Noehren died on August 4 in San Diego, California. He was 91. Dr. Noehren enjoyed a long career as a recitalist, teacher, scholar, and organ builder. He taught at the University of Michigan from 1949 to 1976, serving as head of the organ department and university organist, and was named professor emeritus in 1977.

Born on December 16, 1910, in Buffalo, New York, Noehren studied organ with Gaston Dethier, Ernest Mitchell and Lynnwood Farnam, and composition with Paul Hindemith. Early in his career he served as a church organist in Germantown, Pennsylvania; Buffalo, New York; and Grand Rapids, Michigan. He taught at Davidson College prior to his appointment to the University of Michigan. Noehren made over 40 recordings and was the first organist and one of only two non-French organists to receive the Grand Prix du Disque (for his recording of the Bach Trio Sonatas). In 1978 he received the Performer of the Year Award from the New York City AGO chapter.

Through grants from the Carnegie Foundation and the University of Michigan, Noehren toured France, Germany, and Holland extensively, gathering scaling and voicing data on the organs of those countries. Articles based on those experiences appeared in The Diapason beginning in 1948. He formed his own organ company in Ann Arbor and built 20 organs between 1955 and 1979, including large four-manual instruments at St. John's Cathedral, Milwaukee; First Presbyterian Church, Buffalo, New York; and First Unitarian Church, San Francisco. In 1999, Harmonie Park Press (Warren, Michigan) published Noehren's collection of essays, An Organist's Reader, which details his life in music and organ building. Recent recordings include The Robert Noehren Retrospective (Lyrichord LYR-CD-6005) and Johann Sebastian Bach (Fleur de Lis FL 0101-2).

Historic Aeolian-Skinner installed in Amarillo, Texas

Robert P. Rapp has combined careers in medicine and music, earning his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1956. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he went into private practice in Austin, Texas. Dr. Rapp has been active in the American Guild of Organists since age 14, serving as dean of the Austin chapter 1979–81. He studied organ in Galveston 1937–46 with Norman Niles and Georgia Anne Rahe, with Lee Norrell in San Antonio (1946–47), Anthony Rahe in Houston (1949–50), Walter Haacke in Wiesbaden, Germany (1958–60), and Jerald Hamilton at the University of Texas (1961–62). He has held church organist positions at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Galveston; St. Joseph’s German Church, Galveston; the Shrine of the Little Flower, San Antonio; First Baptist Church, Galveston; St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Austin; and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Austin. Dr. Rapp acted on behalf of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Amarillo, Texas, beginning in 1996, to purchase the Aeolian-Skinner organ from the University of Texas, and worked closely with the UT Dean of Fine Arts, Dr. David Deming.

“The largest pre-war (World War II) Aeolian-Skinner built by G. Donald Harrison remaining almost entirely as built has been acquired by St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Amarillo, Texas.” Thus starts the article in The Tracker (Journal of the Organ Historical Society), volume 41, number 3, 1997.
In 1938, Dr. Ezra William Doty, at the age of 31, was hired to be the first dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas in Austin. At the time there was no faculty, no curriculum, no building, and a $64,000 budget for assembling all of these. In 1940, a new Music Building was built—the only air-conditioned building on the campus—and by 1942 Dean Doty had assembled an art, music, and drama faculty that combined professional expertise with academic credentials.
The October 1, 1941 issue of The Diapason reports that Aeolian-Skinner was awarded the contract to build a new instrument for the Music Building in the summer of that year at a price of $35,000.1 Their Opus 1024 quickly became the “crown jewel” of the school. Dr. Palmer Christian, professor of organ at the University of Michigan and with whom Dean Doty had studied, played the dedication on November 10, 1942.
In various issues of The American Organist in 1944, there are detailed accounts of the recital hall and the organ, along with much information long forgotten. Dr. Christian is quoted:

The new Aeolian-Skinner is an excellent job, one of the best yet. The clarified ensemble does not sound like a horrified ensemble—there is orchestral color. The Orchestral Oboe is excellent. The floating Positiv is a fine achievement, likewise the floating String Organ. Full organ is perfectly tempered to the size of the room—106 stops in a room seating 504—and the climaxes do not blow one out of the seats.2

Opus 1024 was described in the University of Texas campus newspaper The Daily Texan as being

eight organs in one: there is the Positiv, an authentic 17th-century instrument, and a Great organ which is designed in 18th-century tonal style. The usual Swell, Choir, Solo and Pedal organs are included, but these have a choice collection of orchestral solo stops. The other organs included in the one instrument are the Bombarde, which contains heavy reed stops, and a floating String division, both of which may be drawn on any of the four manuals or pedal. The console has four keyboards of 61 notes each and a pedal board with 32 notes. The round and square pipes are made of tin, lead, zinc, and wood.3
Thus began the life of this magnificent, state-of-the-art instrument, containing 6,173 pipes, 103 ranks, 106 stops and 84 voices, with 45 couplers and 70 combination pistons. It quickly became the landmark organ for Aeolian-Skinner. Organists and organ committees from afar came to play, listen, and gain insight into organ planning, construction, and choices of specifications.
As Opus 1024’s fame grew, so did Aeolian-Skinner’s reputation as the maker of highly esteemed organs. Opus 1024 stands out with its famous Aeolian-Skinner kin in Texas as a masterwork of American organ building. G. Donald Harrison last visited Opus 1024 on July 26, 1954. In his letter to Henry Willis (in London), he remarked that the temperature was an astounding 113 degrees!
The music library at the University of Texas verifies that 130 individual organists had performed 293 programs on Opus 1024 over the years 1942–1981. Among the famous organists presented were Catharine Crozier, Alexander Schreiner, Arthur Poister, David Craighead, Marcel Dupré, Carl Weinrich, Virgil Fox, Flor Peeters, Claire Coci, Fernando Germani, Marilyn Mason, Jean Langlais, E. Power Biggs, Robert Noehren, Jeanne Demessieux, George Markey, Vernon de Tar, Jack Ossewarde, John Weaver, Jerald Hamilton, Robert Baker, William Teague, Heinz Wunderlich, William Whitehead, Pierre Cochereau, André Marchal, John Rose, Peter Hurford, Gillian Weir, and Michael Murray.4
In 1965, after countless hours of heavy use for over 23 years by students and visiting artists, it became obvious that renovation was required. Aeolian-Skinner provided a new console, a new combination action, some mechanical repairs and revoicing of reeds, and some revoicing of flues at a total cost of $65,000.5
Following this, the organ was once again heard by the public. These performances were popular (and free), giving the listening public an opportunity to enjoy classical pipe organ music constantly, and continued until 1975. (Michael Murray was the last noted recitalist to perform in the series.) In 1979, Opus 1024 ceased to be used for degree performances. The churches about the campus were used instead. In 1981, the last public hearing of the organ was played by American Guild of Organists members, with Dean Doty in attendance.
In 1983 a new music building was completed (Bates Recital Hall), and a large tracker organ was installed there. The old Music Building recital hall was used for lecture space by the Architecture Department. Various music programs were given there, but the organ sat silent on stage, console locked, with façade pipes still visible.
So ends one chapter of Opus 1024; now begins the next. On February 11, 1996, an accidental fire destroyed St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Amarillo, Texas. It was at this time that it was brought to the attention of Margaret Lacy, the organist of St. Andrew’s, that perhaps the UT organ could be purchased and become a part of the new sanctuary.
After many inquiries and contacts with the UT regents and staff, in 1997 Opus 1024 was rescued from its “retired” status and bought by St. Andrew’s Church. The church chose Schoenstein & Co. to rebuild the organ because of the company’s Aeolian-Skinner connection (Louis Schoenstein worked for
E. M. Skinner, and Lawrence Schoenstein was the West Coast representative for Aeolian-Skinner).
From the very beginning of the construction of the new St. Andrew’s sanctuary, acoustics and placement for the instrument were of utmost importance. Space for the organ was prepared, similar in size to the organ chamber as it existed in the recital hall in Austin, but with better tonal egress. Thanks to the joint efforts of Margaret Lacy and the church’s forward-looking leaders, Jack Bethards, president and tonal director of Schoenstein & Co., Ewart “Red” Wetherill, acoustical consultant, and the Overland Partners, architects, of San Antonio, Texas, Opus 1024 was on its way to having a truly favorable environment to enhance its American Classic tones, which G. Donald Harrison had labored so hard to achieve.
In its Austin home, the only drawback the organ had was that the hall was without reverberation (planned that way by “experts”), so that G. Donald Harrison was never pleased with its placement. In fact, a news article in The Daily Texan of November 11, 1942 quotes a comment gleaned from audience criticism: “the auditorium is too completely lacking in echo.” Now, in Amarillo, it would have the luxury of 3–4 seconds of reverberation, thus giving all the qualities of sound that its original designer had hoped for.
Schoenstein & Co. meticulously made sure that the 1942 Harrison installation was true to the maker’s original tonal ideas. Any changes made in configuration were to the betterment of the pipe locations, with correct speech being maintained. These were as follows:
1) The huge pipes of the 32′ Contra Bourdon were put on the third level above the enclosed boxes for the Choir, Swell, String and Solo divisions, thereby giving them direct speech into the nave rather than being placed in a far left alcove as in Austin;
2) The 32′ Kontra Posaune pipes were likewise placed directly in front of the exposed chests (Pedal, Great, and Positiv divisions), giving them a similar clarity rather than being muffled as in the original layout;
3) The Solo Tuba 8′ did not fit properly on the Solo chest, and was placed unenclosed also in front of the exposed chests described above, thereby giving it direct egress (Research in Aeolian-Skinner records fails to reveal why the Tuba had been placed on a toe board that was too small. It may have been a last minute change, an error, or one of the 1964 changes.);
4) On the Solo chest in the Tuba position Schoenstein added their beautiful Symphonic Flute 8′, thus providing an open solo flute to complement the stopped one;
5) There were two complete changes. The Great mixture, Fourniture III–V, was of extremely large scale in the trebles and at full volume would have been too loud for its new home. Therefore 285 new pipes were made and the original pipes were carefully wrapped and boxed and are in the storage area of the new sanctuary. The same was true of the treble pipes of the Great Quint, which were replaced.
The organ has two additions other than the Symphonic Flute: a Cymbelstern and a medium-volume, medium-scale Pedal 16′ Bourdon. The original stopped Subbass of huge scale was too large in the responsive acoustics of the church and could be used only in large combinations. Its name was changed to Major Bass.
All this makes the organ absolutely complete, lacking nothing for any organist or literature being played. There should be no complaints from any source as to these enhancing changes to an instrument so well respected.
In August 2002, the new sanctuary was completed, and in September 2004 the installation of Opus 1024 began. The huge van arrived containing the vast cargo of the instrument. This included all eleven chests, along with the Vibraharp mechanism, the 62-year-old sugar pine wood for the structure and expression boxes (Choir, Swell, Solo, String, and Bombarde divisions), the reservoirs, tremulants, expression motors, and other parts that had been completely restored to their original pristine condition by Schoenstein over the prior three years.
Work was under the direction of vice president and plant superintendent, Louis Patterson. Tonal finishing was by Jack Bethards with Mark Hotzenpiller and Steuart Goodwin with Wendell Bolltyme. Other key Schoenstein personnel were David Beck, Peter Botto, Chris Hansford, Oliver Jaggi, Joe Lamberana, George Morten, Robert R. Rhoads and Chet Spencer. To provide mobility and multiple memories, the console was equipped with a Peterson ICS control system (replacing the original combination action and relay) and Harris stop knob actions.
Over the next several months, the people of St. Andrew’s marveled at the installation process, and eagerly awaited the day that they could hear Opus 1024. That day came in November 2004, when 25 ranks of the Swell and Choir were playing. Margaret Lacy played it for the first time and was just amazed. She said, “It was a glorious sound, and with over three seconds of reverberation time. Opus 1024 had been given a vibrant and thrilling new voice.” (Seventy-eight ranks were yet to be heard!) In February 2005 the installation was completed. All 103 ranks were in and playing. The Aeolian-Skinner was brought back to life.
The Amarillo Globe-News reported the event of the organ’s arrival as “An Unusual Organ Transplant.”6 There can never be a happier group than those people living in the city of Amarillo who weekly (and quite often daily) get to enjoy the tones of one of the most spectacular organs ever produced by the Aeolian-Skinner company.
The list of organists who have played Opus 1024 in its new home keeps growing, with each performer declaring what a thrill it is to play. The transition from Austin to Amarillo made all the difference and extended the playing life of Opus 1024.
The exciting inaugural event occurred in June 2005 with Thomas Murray performing solo and in conjunction with the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra (playing Handel’s Concerto in F and Poulenc’s Concerto in G). The future of the organ is nothing but exciting as Margaret Lacy continues to bring the brightest and best musicians to come and enjoy the renovated and renewed powerful and beautiful tones of Opus 1024, first heard 63 years ago.
Thus the organ has reached its final destination and fulfilled the dreams of not only its designer, but the dreams of a vast number of organists and non-organists in the west Texas city of Amarillo. It is waiting for any and all who desire to hear what a “vintage” Aeolian-Skinner can sound like in the electronic age. Nothing can compare to what you will experience when you sit in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on South Georgia Street.

Polishing a gem

When we talk with committees today about building a new organ, we remind them that their decision will have ramifications for many generations and that insisting on top quality will be like establishing an endowment—a lasting legacy. First Lutheran’s choice of an Æolian-Skinner in 1956 proves the wisdom of investing in the best—not just the “good enough.” Æolian-Skinner was the gold standard then and still is today. The majority of the most famous and highly regarded instruments in America were made by Skinner in Boston.  

What makes an Æolian-Skinner so special? The answer is that the firm was always guided by people who knew and loved music. The Skinner people seemed to have an innate sense of refined good taste. This artistic impulse was supported by outstanding craftsmanship in every facet of organ building. The depth of expertise was unrivaled.  

Schoenstein & Co. has a long-standing connection with Skinner. From 1907 to 1909 Louis Schoenstein, third generation member of our founding family, worked for Ernest M. Skinner, following the family tradition of broadening skills by apprenticing with other builders. Later, his son Lawrence joined Æolian-Skinner in a more permanent way at the invitation of G. Donald Harrison in 1956. He extended his “apprenticeship” for 16 years! Our company has maintained, restored, and installed numerous Skinner and Æolian-Skinner organs. We can say from decades of practical experience that Æolian-Skinner organs deserve the reputation they have.

Our work at First Lutheran Church began in 1989 when we were asked to survey the organ for the possibility of completing stops prepared for later addition. The organ is Æolian-Skinner Opus 1342, designed in 1957, completed and dedicated by Virgil Fox in 1959. It replaced Wurlitzer Opus 2127, built for the then-new church in 1930. The builder’s plan was for an enlarged Pedal division and a floating Positiv, typical of the period. In 1964, Æolian-Skinner was called back to add an 8 Festival Trumpet and a Zymbelstern. By 1989, the primary concern was to add more weight and power to the Pedal and possibly move forward with some of the other planned additions.  

Our survey confirmed the need for additional Pedal weight, but revealed other points that we thought should take precedence over additions such as the Positiv. The organ suffered from an accumulation of mechanical maintenance issues and it was badly out of regulation, with poor speech and erratic balance within and among stops. This appeared to be due to a rushed installation that allowed hardly any time to finish the instrument before Virgil Fox was to arrive, as well as layout of the enclosed divisions that made the pipework so inaccessible that regulation efforts were undoubtedly hampered. Rushed installations were fairly common during the fast moving post-war boom. The overall quality of Skinner’s magnificent factory voicing, however, made even the jobs finished with a lick and a promise sound quite grand. In 1990 we thoroughly serviced the organ, correcting the mechanical problems and doing some preliminary tonal work. This led us to recommend installing only the planned Bombarde in the Pedal and giving the instrument a thorough tonal regulation before considering any further additions. Hearing an instrument in proper balance with every stop delivering its full potential often obviates the need for more stops or changes the direction that additions might take. Furthermore, we knew that the instrument would need releathering and that the most efficient approach was to take care of any tonal additions along with renovation work. The Bombarde and regulation were completed in 1994.  

By 2010 it was clear that the need for mechanical renovation was imminent and the church was determined to complete the instrument and at the same time rearrange the choir seating and improve the acoustic as far as possible. In consultation with committee chairman James Moore, who is also a trained organist, consultant John Ferguson, music director Michael Elsbernd, and organist emeritus Marcia Kittelson, we developed a plan to solve three musical problems that were considered truly worth addressing after years of experience with the instrument. Although the planned Positiv and additional Pedal upperwork would be nice, it was considered far more urgent to direct the tonal character of the organ towards making up for acoustical problems. After intensive acoustical study, it was determined that it was not practical from an engineering standpoint to make major changes in the building, such as strengthening the ceiling for better sound reflection. Several improvements, including removal of carpet, would make a significant difference; however, sound would not carry well from the balcony to the chancel and mid-range tenor and bass tones would not be supported as well as treble. We decided on a program that would use the available budget to address these issues as well as honor as much as possible the original intention of a Positiv division.

To augment the foundation of the Great, we added a 16 Violone and a large-scale 8 Flute Ouverte. To add some of the “sparkle” promised by the Positiv we added a Seventeenth to the Great as well as a 4 Fugara and Klein Mixtur to the Choir. A five-rank Antiphonal division was added in the chamber formerly occupied by the Wurlitzer organ. Dominated by 8 tone, its main purpose is to provide the acoustical illusion of tone from the main organ in the balcony reaching forward to the chancel. It has proved to be quite effective in this role. It is difficult for anyone in the nave to determine that the Antiphonal is playing; it simply seems to extend the “reach” of the main instrument. The division is also quite helpful in accompanying choirs that occasionally perform from the chancel. The 16 Quintaton, which was a bit light in this acoustic for the Great division, has turned out to be an ideal double for the small Antiphonal.

Our other work included a complete rebuild of the console and electrical control system, which also facilitated the addition of a few useful borrows in the Choir and Pedal. An interesting feature of the console work was the addition of a large music storage cabinet filling the space formerly taken by the electro-pneumatic combination and switching equipment! We built an entirely new expression system with vertical shades located on two sides of each expression box. These replaced the horizontal shades that opened in only one direction and had become warped over the years. This greatly improved the tonal egress of both Swell and Choir divisions. The pipe display was rearranged to incorporate the new 16 and 8 pipes of the Great, making quite a dramatic façade. We also did a complete mechanical rebuild with the exception of wind regulators, which had been completed earlier by the J.F. Nordlie Company, who have done excellent work on the organ over the years. Perhaps of most importance for the organ’s long-term maintenance was a re-engineering of certain aspects of the layout to provide improved access for maintenance.  

This project has been a special pleasure for us because of the long-term relationship we have had with the congregation. Over the years, as we have taken steps towards this final completion, we have enjoyed each of our experiences in Sioux Falls. The congregation is a most active one and is deeply appreciative of good, traditional church music. We have been privileged to know and work with all their musicians throughout this period and the atmosphere has been totally supportive and most pleasant.

I have long been a friend of First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls and enjoyed bringing the St. Olaf Cantorei to the church many times. Thus I was delighted to be asked to help the organ committee explore options for the renovation and possible completion of its 1959 Aeolian-Skinner organ. Fortunately, the people of First Lutheran had taken exceptional care of the instrument and while the time had now arrived for more significant mechanical and electrical upgrades, its basic integrity had been maintained.

The church’s experience working with Jack Bethards and Schoenstein & Co. suggested that the firm was the logical choice to undertake a more extensive process of renewal of the instrument. Since they are highly respected for their restoration work on many Aeolian-Skinner organs, the fit was a natural. It seemed to be the ideal time to complete the preparations evidenced in the console, especially the absent Positiv division. All agreed to utilize the console preparations for an Antiphonal organ instead of adding the typical Aeolian-Skinner brightly voiced Positiv to what already was an instrument needing more gravitas in its sound, especially considering the relatively dry acoustics in the room. It has made a great difference in the effectiveness of the organ, especially as a leader of congregational song. Additional foundational sound was added to the Great and the existing Choir was provided with a complete chorus with mixture, a significant move since the Positiv division was not to be.

During the long gestation of the project, a careful study of the acoustics in the space was undertaken. It soon became evident that any major improvement to the acoustics was not structurally or fiscally possible. However, reflective surfaces in the gallery, especially directly behind the choir, were improved and have enhanced the choir’s projection into the nave and enabled its members to hear one another significantly better.

First Lutheran now has a warmer, more colorful organ. The strong choral tradition of the church has a more versatile accompanimental colleague and the overall sound of the instrument in the room is richer and much more satisfying. Its leadership of the congregation’s singing has been substantially improved. Throughout this lengthy and sometimes frustrating process, I’ve been impressed by the creativity and patience of Jack Bethards of Schoenstein and the perseverance of the committee, especially its chair, James Moore, and organist Marcia Kittelson. They had a vision, never wavered, and the result more than fulfills their hopes and aspirations. Would that it always were so.

Music ministry has long been an important facet of First Lutheran’s identity. It came as no surprise to me, when I joined the professional staff of this church in 2007, that the organ enjoys an active role in the leading of weekly services. Since the installation of Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1342 in 1959, only two other organists have presided at the console: the late Dr. Merle Pflueger (who designed the original stoplist in collaboration with Aeolian-Skinner representatives) and Organist Emerita and Curator of Organs, Marcia Kittelson, whose scholarship and musical excellence cultivated appreciation for the organ and its role in Christian worship. During her tenure at First Lutheran, Marcia Kittelson took excellent care of Opus 1342, and the church owes a tremendous debt of gratitude for her careful preservation of this heritage instrument.  

Given the history of the sanctuary organ, with slightly more than fifty years of service to the congregation, it was not difficult to gain the momentum to undertake its necessary renovation. Knowing the benefits in terms of overall cost, and faced with the prospect of not being able to finish the organ more than fifty years after the initial investment, the organ committee pressed forward with the tenacious and unflagging leadership of chairman James Moore. With the generosity of two lead gifts, the committee was able to finally realize the total project.

Under the guidance of project consultant John Ferguson, the organ committee confidently engaged Schoenstein & Co. to proceed with the renovation and completion of Opus 1342. From the outset, the committee sought to preserve the Aeolian-Skinner aesthetic, while blending in new pipework with the existing stoplist. The committee’s decision to entrust the work to this firm began in the 1990s, when Schoenstein & Co. added a pedal reed and completed necessary regulation work. Furthermore, Schoenstein’s connection to Skinner and Aeolian-Skinner via Louis Schoenstein and his son, Lawrence, who worked for G. Donald Harrison, naturally affirmed this decision.   

From the beginning of the committee’s discussions with Jack Bethards, President and Tonal Director of Schoenstein & Co., it was clear that we could accomplish astounding results with a strikingly conservative approach. Acoustically, it was determined that an Antiphonal organ would be a more appropriate way of rendering the prepared division. Housed in the chancel, the Antiphonal organ lends valuable support to the cantor, choirs, and congregation at the crossing and front portions of the nave. The Quintaton 16, formerly the basis for the gallery Great, now takes its place as a foundation for the Antiphonal organ. The ability to draw the Quintaton separately in the Pedal as well as a manual stop makes it a fine addition to the new colorful foundation stops.

Further enhancements to the Great and Choir divisions were also desired; the Great lacked an appropriately scaled 16 to support the principal chorus, and the Choir division, while ideal for the accompaniment of choirs and solo vocalists, lacked a chorus that could contrast with the Swell. Added support to the Great division is offered by a new Violone at 16 and 8 pitch, an 8 Flute Ouverte, and a 135 principal-scaled Seventeenth. With the appropriate foundation tones now in place, the existing mixture, a 113 IV–VI Fourniture, makes sense to the ear. The additional mutation stop, when combined with the existing 223 Twelfth, allows for a contrasting Sesquialtera to the Choir.   

Joining the existing pipework in the Choir are a new 4 Fugara and 2 Klein Mixtur. While modest, to be sure, these two additions give the Choir a firm identity, and a fine contrast to the Swell plenum. The ability to make the existing Krummhorn speak at 16 to tenor C adds further gravity to the division.

The finished organ opens a new chapter in the life of First Lutheran and Opus 1342. With the renovation and completion accomplished, the church members have answered the call of the 1956 organ committee—continuing to invest well in those things that ensure a worthy legacy of faith—even as other “steeples are falling” in favor of fleeting trends. Towering over the east balcony is an instrument of stately beauty, completely at home with its Gothic surroundings. In this context, I believe one starts to hear the organ—first by sight. When played, it sounds like one expects it should—with grace, exquisite beauty, and majestic power. It was rededicated in a public recital played by Grammy Award-winning organist Paul Jacobs, chairman of the organ department at the Juilliard School, to a capacity audience on December 4, 2011.

First Lutheran has enjoyed an ongoing relationship with this firm since the early 1990s, and it is a joy to see the progress over the years that continues to make Opus 1342 an ever more perfect instrument. The finished organ has exceeded what many of us thought possible, and we could not imagine a more satisfying relationship than that which we have enjoyed with the professionals at Schoenstein & Co.

When the organ committee recommended the purchase of an Aeolian-Skinner in 1956, they probably knew how well the instrument would serve the church beyond their lifetimes. They probably did not know that the organ would still be unfinished 50 years later. Purchased at a cost of $52,000, the organ as installed and dedicated was missing reeds, a mixture, and upperwork in the Pedal division, as well as a Positiv division, all of which could have been added at the time for another $12,000.  

As Opus 1342 approached its fiftieth anniversary in November 2009, a new organ committee, formed in 2007, had two goals: to complete the instrument, and to do everything necessary to keep the organ in service for another 50 years. 

Having worked with Jack Bethards and Schoenstein & Co. in the early 1990s on a reed addition to the Pedal and other tonal regulation of the entire organ, the committee had no trouble deciding to move forward with Schoenstein. With the invaluable help of John Ferguson, our consultant and long-time friend of First Lutheran, we quickly agreed on the scope of work. It took longer to find our way through the political processes and to raise the money needed to finish the project, but with help from many faithful members, we did. 

In the end, we made the instrument mechanically current, added 12 ranks of pipes, and ensured that the organ should serve First Lutheran Church long beyond those of us on the committee. The results exceed our expectations in every way: the Antiphonal division enables the sound of the organ to fill the room for the first time, the new 8 stops add warmth and richness of tone without changing the organ’s identity as an Aeolian-Skinner, and all of the new stops add impressive tonal color and versatility. 

Jack Bethards, Louis Patterson, and everyone at Schoenstein have been always timely, responsive, and professional. Their work is simply excellent, and speaks for itself.
