Adrian Gebruers Honored

In the last few weeks of his papacy, His Holiness Pope John Paul II conferred on Adrian Patrick Gebruers the very special honor of Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, in recognition of outstanding service. The scroll was formally presented by Most Rev. Dr. John Magee, Bishop of Cloyne, at a ceremony in St. Colman’s Cathedral, Cobh, Ireland, on Sunday May 29, Feast of Corpus Christi. Gebruers’ association with church music began at the tender age of seven as a boy soprano in the Cathedral Choir. In 1970, he succeeded his late father Staf (himself the recipient of the Papal Cross of Honour “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice”) as organist, choirmaster and carillonneur. In addition to being director of music at St. Colman’s, he is also lecturer in carillon studies at the music department of University College Cork.

In 1998, he was elected president of the World Carillon Federation and is also honorary president emeritus of the British Carillon Society and a founder Vice-President of Eurocarillon. He is a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America.

Nunc Dimittis: Janet Dundore

On Thursday, March 31, 2005, carillonneur Janet Dundore passed away at the age of 84. During her funeral service, Janet’s family spoke eloquently about her life, comparing it to the dynamics of a carillon bell, that once struck, the sound cannot be dampened. Janet’s association with the carillon—its music, programming, audience, organization—all reflected her unswerving, undampened desire to bring music to people’s lives.

Janet was internationally recognized as a proponent of carillon. She served as president of the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America during some turbulent years. To encourage members to stop arguing, she handed out Tootsie Rolls to keep their jaws “occupied.” In recognition of her lifelong contributions to the art of the carillon, the GCNA presented her with Honorary Membership and the Certificate of Distinguished Service. In addition, The University of California, Berkeley, awarded her the Berkeley Medal, the university’s highest and most prestigious award, in recognition of her efforts which had “manifestly benefited the public well beyond the demands of tradition, rank, or direct service to the University.” St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh, bestowed the title of Carillonneur Emerita on Janet upon her retirement in 1999 following 26 years of service to the church.

Janet was the first carillonneur at St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania. Besides her position at St. Thomas’, Janet also served as carillonneur at Trinity United Church of Christ. When Trinity moved from North Philadelphia to its present location in Bucks County, she was adamant that the parish not leave their bells behind. To this day, the open tower, which showcases all 49 carillon bells of Trinity, is a Bucks County landmark and a testament to Janet’s vision that bells can be heard and seen.
For over 30 years Janet was carillonneur of the Miraculous Medal Shrine in Germantown, Philadelphia, one of the oldest carillons in the United States. For decades, Janet played Monday night novena services at the Shrine, bringing music not only to the faithful, but to an entire neighborhood.
Janet studied carillon with Frank Law of Valley Forge and Leen ’t Hart at the Dutch Carillon School in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. She performed carillon recitals throughout the Americas and Europe. Together with her husband, Dwight, Janet traveled the world in search of carillons and their players. She was a respected scholar, teacher, and authority on audience development. Her no-nonsense approach to programming still reverberates in our ears: “Always end a recital with something familiar so the audience knows when to clap!” She took great pride in the Tuesday evening audiences gathered in the grove at St. Thomas’ Church to listen to the carillon.

Perhaps Janet’s legacy with carillon bells can be summed up with a simple analogy: She pointed towards the sky and showed us how to fill it with music.

Cobh bells return home

Adrian Patrick Gebruers, carillonneur of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh, Ireland, sends the following news. Adrian Gebruers and St. Colman's Cathedral will be hosts for the congress of the World Carillon Federation in 2002.

Early in the morning of Wednesday April 15, 1998, the ship "Mathilda" sailed past St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh,  Ireland, en route from Rotterdam to the Port of Cork.  On board was the precious cargo of the bells of the cathedral carillon returning from the Royal Eijsbouts Foundry in Asten, The Netherlands, where they had been since the previous October as part of the complete restoration and modernization of this famous carillon. The following Sunday afternoon, all forty-nine bells were lined up at the base of the cathedral tower to be viewed by the general public. In all, several thousand people came to admire and photograph the bells which have always been so much a part of the life of the community. An exhibition of material illustrating the history of the Cobh Carillon past and present aroused great interest. At 6 pm, Bishop John Magee of Cloyne, who had specially returned from the Vatican where he was on official business, performed the solemn blessing of the bells. The two new bass bells were named for the Irish martyrs St. Oliver Plunkett and Blessed Dominic Collins, and the five treble bells added in 1958 but not named at the time were christened Sts. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice, the great Irish educationalist. In his homily, the Bishop referred to the significance and importance of bells in religious worship and in the daily life of the community. He also thanked all those who had made the carillon restoration possible, including Royal Eijsbouts. The choir was under the direction of Adrian Patrick Gebruers, organist, choirmaster, and carillonneur of St. Colman's Cathedral. Readings were done by members of the Cobh Carillon Committee, including David H. Cox, professor of music at University College Cork, and Dr. Elizabeth Gebruers, wife of the carillonneur. The responsorial psalm "I Will Sing Forever of Your Love O Lord" was sung by Adrian Gebruers in a setting composed by his late father, Staf Gebruers, the first carillonneur of St. Colman's. The intercessions included prayers for those deceased carillonneurs who had played the Cobh Carillon and for Jef Rottiers, teacher in Mechelen of the present carillonneur. As the Bishop blessed and incensed the bells, the cathedral choir sang the church's great hymn of thanksgiving, the first line of which is inscribed on the bourdon of the carillon: "Te Deum Laudamus" ("We praise Thee, O God").

The formal rededication of the restored and modernised 49-bell carillon of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh took place on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 1998. The day began with a live link-up on the regional radio station of key figures involved in the restoration, including Bishop John Magee and the Cathedral Carillonneur. This was followed at noon by a special Mass in the Cathedral, concelebrated by the Bishop and members of the Diocesan Chapter. The first Carillonneur of St. Colman's, the late Staf Gebruers, and his wife Maureen were commemorated in the Bidding Prayers. In addition, the Cathedral Choir sang compositions by Staf Gebruers during the Mass. The two new bass bells, named St. Oliver Plunkett and Blessed Dominic Collins, were formally rung for the first time during the Elevation. At the conclusion of the Mass, the Bishop and other dignitaries walked in solemn procession to the tower entrance where a commemorative sculpture was unveiled. The Bishop then formally declared the carillon rededicated and the Carillonneur played the hymn, "The Bells of the Angelus," which was the last piece heard on the bells the previous October just before the restoration work began. This was followed by the "Te Deum" Prelude by Charpentier. The short recital concluded with the first performance of The Sacred Metal by David Harold Cox, Professor of Music at University College Cork. This work was commissioned for the occasion by the Cobh Carillon Committee, with funds provided by the Arts Council, and especially highlights the two new bass bell notes of C-sharp and D-sharp. There followed a formal reception in the Bishop's House. In attendance were local and visiting dignitaries, including Ministers of State and TD's (Members of Parliament). In a speech, Bishop Magree spoke emotionally of his joy in finally having the carillon restored. A letter of congratulations from Mr. Loek Boogert, President of the World Carillon Federation, was also read out. There was an hour-long recital at 4:30 during which guests and journalists were given an opportunity to view the new carillon installation. They were shown the computer-operated automatic and practice-console systems, the galvanized steel framework and mechanism and the playing cabin now located within the belfry. All expressed their approval of the quality of the workmanship and congratulations were extended to P. J. Hegarty & Sons, the main contractors, and Royal Eijsbouts, the bellfounders, for a job well done.

Dutch Carillon Museum

The National Carilllon Museum in Asten, The Netherlands, publishes the quarterly Berichten uit Het Nationaal Beiaarrdmuseum. Here follows some information from recent issues.

* Many bells were removed from towers during World War II to be melted for their metal. A number were saved from destruction and were the subject of research. One resulting dissertation was Acoustical Measurements on Church Bells and Carillons by E.W. van Heuven (Delft, 1949). Less well-known is the research done by E. Thienhaus of Hamburg which includes detailed drawings of hundreds of German bells. Simon Lighthart of Bemmel has taken on the project to do statistical research on this collection of information in the Dutch National Carillon Museum.

* A recent donation to the museum is an African mask which was traditionally used in an adolescent's initiation rite to manhood. A bell is found on the back of the mask with which the Great Spirit announced its coming. The mask has its origins in the Baga tribe in Guinea. The museum also acquired an African mask used by the Dan tribe of the Ivory Coast in their ritual dances. A beard of bells forms a half circle which is completed with jingle bells around the forehead hairline. Further, the museum acquired items worn by shamans from Nepal: two leather belts are decorated with bells, a tail, and tiger teeth.

* Museum curator André Lehr tells the fascinating story of "A squabble between Nijmegen and Liege--or--how Jean-Baptiste Levache of Liege cast a false-sounding carillon for  Nijmegen in 1735." It could also be entitled "The merry pranks of an unscrupulous bellfounder."

* The traditional western European bell profile has scarcely changed since the Middle Ages. The cost of experimentation has been drastically reduced thanks to the advent of special computer programs. A recent design demonstrates that it would be possible to produce a bell with the same pitch and timbre as, yet 20% lighter than, a bell with a traditional profile.

* The Dutch National Service for the Preservation of Monuments publishes a brochure concerning the nuisance of pigeons in towers.

* Bert Augustus discusses the Eijsbouts firm's restoration of the tolling bells for the cathedral of Seville. He describes the Spanish tradition of tolling bells in which the bells are swung in complete revolutions causing characteristic rhythmic patterns, a characteristic timbre due to the dampening of the bell by the clapper, and lots of damage to the bells. * André Lehre muses over what possessed the 16th-century inhabitants of the Low Countries to enthusiastically acquire incredibly false-sounding carillons for virtually every city. He says that a pilgrimage to Monnickendam is in order to hear the Speeltoren carillon that was cast in 1596 by Peter III van den Ghein, since it is the only place that one can witness the original sound of a complete 16th-century carillon. He notes that the imperfections of early carillon bells were masked to a certain extent in several ways. Old playing consoles and photographs indicate that there was sometimes the possibility of reducing the keyfall in which case the bells were struck with less force producing a sound that favored the fundamental pitch and reduced the strength of the overtones. The use of wrought iron clappers gave a milder sound. Furthermore, performance practice differed: virtuosic playing was the exception. Also, dissonance was minimized in a musical texture in which normally only two notes were struck simultaneously.

1995 GCNA Congress

The 53rd Congress of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America was held at Princeton University, June 21-25, 1995. Robin Austin, Carillonneur of Princeton University, served as host. There were 114 registered participants representing Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Ireland, The Netherlands, and the USA. The Congress served as a commemoration of Professor Arthur Lynds Bigelow (1910-1967), Princeton's first carillonneur and one of America's first campanologists. Bigelow hosted GCNA Congresses at Princeton in 1946 and 1966.

Guild President Larry Weinstein opened the Congress with a recital on the Princeton University Carillon. His program featured Ronald Barnes' Capriccio 3, commissioned by the University for the rededication of the renovated instrument in 1993. Other congress recitalists included Janet Dundore, Carillonneur at St. Thomas' Church, Whitemarsh, PA; Richard Watson, campanologist and designer of the refitted Princeton carillon; Jeff Davis, Assistant Carillonneur at the University of California, Berkeley; Tin-shi Tam, Carillonneur at Iowa State University; and Luc Rombouts, Carillonneur at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium and City Carillonneur of Tienen, Belgium.

An excursion on Friday enabled participants to visit two other area carillons. Robert Byrnes, Carillonneur at the University of Northern Iowa, was heard in recital at Grace Church in Plainfield, New Jersey. Arie Abbenes, instructor at The Netherlands Carillon School and City Carillonneur of Utrecht, Eindhoven, Asten, and Oirschot, performed at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Morristown, New Jersey. Richard Morgan, Organist and Choirmaster of St. Peter's Church, demonstrated the 1930 E.M. Skinner organ there as well as playing a recital on the organ in the Princeton University Chapel.

John Agraz presented a case study on carillon maintenance and construction, stemming from his experiences with the Berkeley carillon. Karel Keldermans and Richard Watson made presentations on the North American Standard for carillon keyboard construction. Milford Myhre and Sally Slade Warner led a workshop on arranging music for carillon—participants had sent in arrangements and transcriptions in advance for commentary at the Congress. Jo Haazen gave a talk on the Belgian Carillon School, of which she is director. Arie Abbenes and Jacques Maassen presented the Dutch Carillon School's video production on carillon playing technique. Luc Rombouts reported on the recent discovery (April, 1995) of a  manuscript of the carillon works of Matthias van den Gheyn which includes six unknown works.

Princeton University Archivist Ben Primer organized an exhibit on Arthur Bigelow and the "Class of 1892 Bells" from materials in the Bigelow Papers at Firestone Library. Chimemasters Bob Feldman and Donald Beer organized activities at Trinity Church for those who play chime. The church has a 12-bell Meneely/Paccard chime.

Officers for 1995-96 include Larry Weinstein, President; Gloria Werblow, Vice-President; Phillip Burgess, Treasurer; Janet Tebbel, Corresponding Secretary; and David Hunsberger, Recording Secretary. Jane Tebbel, Jeff Davis, and Andrea McCrady were elected as members at-large of the board.

A certificate of extraordinary service was awarded to Margo Halsted upon completion of her 15-year editorship of Carillon News, the newsletter of the GCNA. Her successor in that position in Brian Swager. Honorary membership  status was conferred on Albert Bertram, Walter Pittis, Gary Walker, and Ronald Barnes. Lori Lamma, a student of Ronald Barnes, played an advancement recital and was voted into carillonneur membership.

The Royal Eijsbous Bellfoundry sponsored an elegant banquet. John Taylor Bellfounders sponsored a luncheon at St. Peter's in Morristown. And the Verdin Company sponsored the annual pizza party. As a post-congress event, Janet Dundore and Janet Tebbel organized a tour of Philadelphia-area carillons. Sally Slade Warner extended an invitation to the 1996 Congress which she will host in Cohasset, Massachusetts, June 25-28.

GCNA composition competition

The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America is sponsoring a composition competition for new music for carillon. The piece must be written for an instrument of up to 48 bells with a compass of C, D, D#, thence chromatic through c3. First and second prizes will be $800 and $400, respectively. The deadline for entries is January 15, 1966. Winning compositions will be performed at a congress of the GCNA and will be published by that organization. A 90-minute video tape demonstrating aspects of playing and composing for the carillon, geared toward composers, is available for $15 postpaid. Mobile carillons in the news and a new publication

The Carillon Academy of Lier, Belgium, offered a carillon summer course in July for beginning and intermediate levels as well as a masterclass for advanced students. The course was taught by Koen Van Assche and Geert D’hollander, with instruction on making carillon arrangements by Anna Maria Reverté. Lodging was in the abbey of Averbode.  

 

Dick Gegner was honored Monday at Memorial Day ceremonies in the Village of Mariemont by being named Mariemont Citizen of the Year, by the Mayor and Council. Gegner has been the carillonneur of the Mary M. Emery Memorial Carillon in Mariemont, an eastern suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio, for 45 years. 

 

Mobile carillons in the news

Dutch carillonneur Boudewijn Zwart took his mobile carillon to Ireland for a series of recitals in Cork City and St. Colman’s Cathedral in Cobh. The photos show the carillon being hoisted into the Blackpool Library in Cork for a series of children’s concerts, and Adrian Gebruers lending a helping hand for a budding carillonneur’s first rendition of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” This attracted considerable media attention, including headline billing on Irish television’s peak-time news bulletins.

 

Cast in Bronze creator Frank DellaPenna commissioned the first mobile carillon ever to be constructed in the United States. The 35 bells on the carillon consist of 25 Petit & Fritsen bells and 10 Eijsbouts bells. Both bell foundries are in the Netherlands. Ewald A. Stellrecht, proprietor of ESE Machines in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, designed and build a keyboard, frame, and carillon action. Michael Shaffer of Bandara, Texas, constructed the wooden music rack.  David Mars, owner of Texas Trans Am Service and Restoration in Fort Worth, Texas, custom-built the carillon trailer. The bourdon, inscribed to Anne and Frank DellaPenna, weighs 640 pounds. The batons (keys) are made from Lucite, which is more weather and rodent resistant than traditional wood. For the audience to visualize the carillon’s similarity with other keyboard instruments, the batons are purposefully colored black and white. The new carillon was inaugurated at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. DellaPenna created Cast in Bronze, a musical act employing his four-ton mobile carillon, over 20 years ago to bring the haunting beauty of the carillon to more listeners by demonstrating its versatility with other instruments. New publication

Publishing company Davidsfonds published a book by Luc Rombouts: Zingend brons. 500 jaar beiaardmuziek in de Lage Landen en de Nieuwe Wereld (“Singing Bronze. 500 Years of Carillon Music in the Low Countries and the New World”). The book gives a complete overview of the past and present of the carillon, starting with the first jingling bells in the Middle East, and ending with the present status of the carillon and the threats to and potential of the instrument in the future. It is written not only for carillon enthusiasts and specialists, but also to arouse interest for the carillon with the greater public. It contains no lists or inventories of carillons, but tells a story of development, flourishing and decline, of aspirations, successes, and disappointments.

Three chapters are devoted to the carillon art in North America: 1) “Memorial Bells,” about the English bell foundries and the creation of carillons in the Anglo-Saxon world between the two World Wars; 2) “Dutch production vs. Carillon Americana,” about the successes of the Dutch bell foundries after WW II and the struggle against electronic “carillons” in the USA and Europe; and 3) “American Beauty,” about the advent of the American carillon movement and the creation of a new carillon repertoire beginning in the 1950s.

Zingend brons is written in Dutch. It contains 460 pages and 230 full-color pictures.

Bok Tower Festival

The 17th International Carillon Festival at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, Florida, February 23-March 3, 2002, will feature guest carillonneurs Koen Van Assche (Belgium), Sjoerd Tamminga (The Netherlands), J. Samuel Hammond (Duke University, Durham NC), Helen Hawley (Lawrence, KS), and Bok Tower carillonneurs Milford Myhre and William De Turk. Ireland World Congress

The next congress of the World Carillon Federation will take place in Cobh and at the National University of Ireland in Cork from Sunday 28 July through Thursday 1 August, 2002. Hosted by the British Carillon Society, this is the first world congress to be held in Ireland or Britain. The theme of the congress is "The Carillon and the Music of the People."

Cobh (pronounced "Cove") has a population of 10,000. Cobh is a picturesque and historic harbor town on Ireland's south coast and a major tourist destination. Cork Airport and Ringaskiddy Ferry Port are a 30-minute drive from Cobh, and both have regular international service.

The magnificent fully chromatic four-octave 49-bell carillon of St. Colman's Cathedral (bourdon 8000 pounds) is a Taylor instrument dating from 1916 which was completely restored, modernized and enlarged by the Royal Eijsbouts Bellfoundry of Asten, The Netherlands, in 1998. It is a transposing instrument, in A, and is now the largest carillon in Ireland and Britain in terms of the number of bells.  The playing console is of North-American standard dimensions. There is also a state-of-the-art practice console.

Some 15 miles upriver is Cork (population 200,000), where the university's renowned music department has recently been relocated to a fine period building overlooking the city. Its facilities include a carillon practice console, identical to the one in Cobh.

The President of Ireland, Her Excellency Mary McAleese, has been invited to formally open the Congress; Most Rev. Dr. John Magee, Bishop of Cloyne, and Professor G.T. Wrixon, President of the University College Cork, are the congress patrons. The Eijsbouts traveling carillon will be available for the duration of the congress. An interesting and enjoyable program is being planned by the organizers, including morning, lunch time, afternoon and evening carillon recitals (30 minutes) every day. There will be an academic day at University College Cork, a day featuring young and upcoming carillonneurs, a congress banquet, Irish traditional music and dancing, sight-seeing tour of East Cork, a Cobh harbor boat trip, and a fireworks display.

Profile: Miraculous Medal Shrine

St. Vincent's Seminary was established in 1867 in Germantown, PA, about eight miles northeast of Philadelphia. A chapel for the seminary on Chelten Avenue was completed in 1879 and a tower was added twenty years later. It is now known as the Miraculous Medal Shrine.

In the late 19th century, a Germantown Vincentian on a pilgrimage to the birthplace of St. Vincent de Paul visited the Church of Notre Dame in Buglose, France. He was sufficiently inspired by the 60-bell carillon there that he persuaded his home seminary and congregation to install a carillon at St. Vincent's in Germantown.

A carillon of 26 bells was ordered from the Paccard Bellfoundry of Annecy-le-Vieux, France, in 1900 and was installed the following spring. The bourdon weighed 3,300 pounds and sounded D. The compass was D, G, G# chromatic through g2. The carillon was played from a so-called "Maisonnave keyboard," one of several unsuccessful inventions of the late 19th century designed to enable the carillonneur--or any keyboardist-- to play from a piano-type keyboard with more ease than the traditional carillon keyboard offers. The carillon was silent during at least one of the following two decades due to the unreliability of Canon Maisonnave's machine.

Arthur Bigelow described the bells in 1946: "The bells of St. Vincent's represent the finest instrument cast in the 1800s. Furthermore, they are the first tuned carillon bells to be installed in the New World and are a perfect example of Old World craftsmanship, in this civilization of ours where expediency often dictates the amount of care we are to bestow upon an object. In the bells of Germantown we see united the beauty of tone with the beauty of form and decoration. Beautiful to hear, the bells are also beautiful to look upon. The designs of the bells, the inscriptions, the filigree work, the festoons about their waists, and the decorations about their shoulders, the exquisitely molded and cast bas-reliefs and high reliefs of the crucifixes and figures of saints, complete to the finest detail, all bespeak the love of the founder for his bells. Every bell is complete with its crown by which the bells are attached to their wooden beams."

In 1945, Arthur Bigelow began a proj-ect of restoring and enlarging the carillon. By 1946 he had rehung the bells and built a conventional carillon console. The Paccard foundry furnished two new bells (E and F#) in 1948 to fill in the gap in the lowest octave. Bigelow himself cast 19 treble bells for the instrument. The four-octave carillon with a keyboard compass of C, D, E, chromatic to c3 was dedicated in 1952.

Remy Müller was carillonneur at St. Vincent's from 1946 until his retirement in 1969. He wsa succeeded by Janet Dundore, who plays between Novena services every Monday evening. Three 30-minute playing segments are scheduled beginning at 5:30 and ending at 8:00.

Carillon dedication

A new carillon on the North Campus of the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor, will be dedicated during a special ceremony on Thursday, October 19 at 9:00 p.m. During the spring and summer, the instrument is to be installed in the new and modern tower designed by the late architect Charles Moore of Austin, Texas. The dedication ceremony is planned to include music played on the new carillon and music performed by the University of Michigan Symphony Band, by itself and with the carillon. In addition to the music, there will be special tower lighting effects and fireworks.

The Lurie Carillon and Lurie Tower are named after Robert
Lurie and were donated by his widow, Ann, of Chicago. Robert Lurie held two
degrees in engineering from the University of Michigan. Royal Eijsbouts of The
Netherlands cast the 60 bells (bourdon G of six tons) to a modified Hemony
profile. Thirty-eight of the bells will also have MIDI capability. A new
practice keyboard will be installed in a nearby building.

Two works for carillon have been commissioned for the
dedication. The commissions went to University of Michigan composer William
Albright and to Mannheim Steamroller composer and director, Chip Davis, a
graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music. To help celebrate the
event, there is also a carillon composition competition for University of
Michigan student composers with cash prizes. The winning student pieces will be
performed at special concerts following the dedication.

Ronald Barnes honored

Honorary membership in the Guild of Carillonneurs in North
America was conferred on Ronald Barnes at the 1995 Congress in Princeton, New
Jersey. David Hunsberger nominated Mr. Barnes for this honor with the following
tribute.

Born and brought up in Lincoln, Nebraska, Mr. Barnes
believes his parents took him as a young child to hear Anton Brees dedicate the
carillon at First Plymouth Congregational Church. Fifteen years later, he
studied organ with Myron Roberts, the church's organist, who one day asked if
he would consider learning to play the carillon, since Mary Guest, the woman
then playing, planned to move away.

Young Ronald ascended the tower to watch her play, and
remembers that she played melodies only, and only in the bottom two octaves,
grasping the keys chime-style. When he asked her why she did not also use the
higher notes she replied that they didn't work, and sure enough, when he tried
one it would not move. Only a few days later, when he and his older brother
Bryce actually made their way into the bell chamber (in those days a hazardous
climb indeed) did he realize that all those notes had bells attached to them.

The two young men carried twelve bushel baskets full of dead
pigeons, droppings, and other dirt from the tower. They cleaned and lubricated
the playing action, disassembling some of it. When they had finished, Ronald
went up the following Sunday to play. Since he owned no carillon music, he simply played scales up and down the compass. The phone immediately began to ring, with neighborhood people wanting to know when the church had gotten the new bells. So far as he can determine, the last person to have played the small
bells on that carillon had been Anton Brees at the dedicatory recitals a decade
and a half earlier!

At the end of World War II Mr. Barnes served in the US Navy
in Japan during the occupation, on a destroyer tender as a specialist working
with navigational instruments, and later as a helmsman on a destroyer.
Afterwards he used the GI Bill to earn a Master of Arts degree in musicology at
Stanford University, where for his thesis he wrote a study of the carillon
preludes of Matthias van den Gheyn. He attended his first GCNA congress in 1948
at Ann Arbor, where he, Theophil Rusterholz, and Bertram Strickland played
their advancement recitals. Following the Congress he spent the summer in
Ottawa with Robert Donnell, which was to be his only formal study of the
carillon.

In 1951 he accepted an appointment to play the large new
Taylor carillon in Lawrence, Kansas, which he says was the finest in the world
at the time. While on the Kansas University faculty he also taught harpsichord
and cared for the university's instrument collection. In 1963 he again accepted
an appointment to play a brand new Taylor carillon, which he again thought was
the best carillon in the world, this time at the Washington Cathedral.

Finally, in 1982 he returned to California to preside over
the Class of 1928 Carillon at Berkeley. Under his supervision the Berkeley
instrument has been enlarged once and improved several times.

He has been host of three congresses, one at each of his
towers beginning in Kansas in 1956, and will be one of the hosts, along with
his successor, at the 1998 congress in Berkeley. He was President of the Guild
during part of the 1960s, and served for seven years during the 1950s as editor
of the Bulletin.

It was Mr. Barnes' personal encouragement that led several
of our most important composers, among them Roy Hamlin Johnson, John Pozdro,
and Gary White, to develop an interest in the carillon. He has played pivotal
roles in beginning and nurturing the carillon careers of some of our most
distinguished players, including Milford Myhre, Richard Strauss, and Daniel
Robins. He has written provocatively and with penetrating insight several times
for the Bulletin, working to set new standards for quality of performance,
choice of repertory, and sophistication in design and construction of instruments. But there is no doubt in my mind that the contribution that overshadows all others is his contribution to our instrument's musical literature. Dating back to his earliest years at Kansas and deepening during the years, the flow of compositions in his mature years has made our lives as performers increasingly worth living.

After 13 years of service, Ronald Barnes retired from his
position as University Carillonist at the University of California, Berkeley,
on October 15, 1995. Jeff Davis has been appointed Acting University
Carillonist.

Eurocarillon Festival

The first Eurocarillon Festival took place in Bruges and
Damme, Belgium, on September 1–3, 1995. It was organized by the two
cities and the newly founded European carillon organization, Eurocarillon, which
consists of representatives from Portugal, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany,
Spain, England, and The Netherlands.

On the first two days several concerts were given on the
carillon hung in the high Bruges town hall belfry overlooking the central market
square. The 47-bell instrument with a six-ton bourdon was cast in 1748 by Joris
Dumery and renovated in 1969 by Eijsbouts. A four-hands rendition of Vivaldi's
The Four Seasons given by Abel Chavez and Anna Maria Reverté was one of
the festival's high points. During another concert Aimé Lombaert and
Boudewijn Zwart's performance was seen on video and heard on loudspeakers in
one of the town hall's rooms where it was coordinated with the simultaneous
playing of a percussion ensemble. The closing concerts were held on the town
hall carillon of the nearby port of Damme which was reached by a boat trip
through a picturesque landscape.

The purpose of Eurocarillon is to strengthen the position of
the carillon and the carillonneur in European cultural life. The organization
will serve as an important showcase of European carillon culture. Each year a
special Eurocarillon concert featuring the same program will be given on the
same day at the same time in all of Eurocarillon's member cities, and a
Eurocarillon festival will be held in one of the member countries. Discussions
are currently underway to hold festivals this year in Lyons, next year in
Barcelona, and in 1998 in Amsterdam.
